“The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”.

As I wrote my morning work brief, and perused to see what happened this day in history; what stood out was George Washington’s Farewell Address published this day September 19, 1796. Washington’s principal concern was for the safety of the eight-year-old Constitution; he believed that the stability of the Republic was threatened by the forces of geographical sectionalism, political factionalism, and interference by foreign powers in the nation’s domestic affairs. - not that this relates at all to today’s affairs. It is in turbulent times we live in; without question.

An excerpt from another of this countries great President’s final addresses stands out, “...You can go to live in Turkey, but you can’t become a Turk. You can go to live in Japan, but you cannot become Japanese—or Germany or France. But anyone from any corner of the earth can come to live in América and become an American.”

As we head into the weekend, I hope and pray we can all take a pause to search for the light and love that is still abundant, if we seek it. On that, from another great, beautiful American who eloquently said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”

Four planes. Nineteen hijackers. Two thousand nine hundred ninety-seven lives were lost. A nation left shattered. 24 years; and if feels like yesterday running down the Cowen trading floor at Old Slip and seeing the burned and tattered research reports from Cantor Fitzgerald drifting from above.

Typically, the 9/11 Memorial & Museum will observe six moments of silence acknowledging when each of the World Trade Center towers was struck and fell and the times of the attack on the Pentagon and the crash of Flight 93.

8:46am - American Airlines Flight 11 crashes into the World Trade Center’s North Tower

9:03am - United Airlines Flight 175 crashes into the WTC’s South Tower

9:37am - American Airlines Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon

9:59am - The South Tower of the World Trade Center collapses

10:02am - United Flight 93 crashes into an empty field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Although its ultimate target is unknown, it was likely heading for either the White House or the US Capitol.

10:28am - The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses.

We must never forget, never stop telling the stories of those lost, of the heroes of that day, and on how unpredictable and precious life is.

The photo was taken by Bill Biggart, the only journalist who passed away covering 9/11.

Happy 249th Birthday America!

On this day let us remember the freedoms we celebrate didn’t come for free; they came at, and are protected to this very day and now at a high cost.

There were 56 delegates at the 2nd Continental Congress who signed the Declaration of Independence, America’s "Founding Fathers."
• 5 were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.
• 12 had their homes ransacked and burned.
• 2 lost their sons in the revolutionary army, another had 2 sons captured.
• 9 of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the revolutionary war.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?
• 24 were lawyers and jurists.
• 11 were merchants.
• 9 were farmers and large plantation owners, men of means, well educated.

They signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

These are the sacrifices of the American Revolution – OUR America. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians but soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: “For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

Last week Sensei Jim was honored his first pair of Nunchaku.
Sensei Jim holds both consistency and discipline as the highest values in life. Without discipline you never start, and without consistency you never finish. Jim works hard and trains day after day, because he trusts the process. He’s a captain of one of the busiest fire houses in Brooklyn, outside of his martial arts training. Jim continuously places his life on the line for the public and his firehouse.
We are incredibly honored to move him further along in his training. Congrats Sensei Jim!

With discipline and consistency, you can achieve long term goals. Come try the first week free, and begin your journey.

Today, we don’t celebrate.

We remember.

We honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to this great country.

Not for glory, not for recognition,
but so we could live free.

Memorial Day isn’t about a day off.

It’s about the ones who never got one again.

Their sacrifice built the freedom we wake up to.

The freedom to move, to speak, to lift, to build, to lead.

Don’t take that lightly — not today, not ever.

God Bless those who never had the chance to take off their uniform in defense of this great nation, to their families; and may God always bless the United States of America!
