Our body craves familiar chemicals, itâs addicted to what weâve given it for decades and will resist with incredible, almost inexplicable, force when we start to grow and change our biology.
So if our âgo toâ reaction is anger, fear, shame, or being defensive, regardless of whether the threat is real or perceived, our body is used to the chemical cocktail that we produce when we FEEL those emotions..
Every time we focus on the things that make us feel those negative emotions, thereâs a part of our brain that mixes up the exact chemicals that were produced when the original event happened and we decided what to believe. eg. s&xual/physical/psychological abuse, body shaming, abandonment, emotional manipulation, criticism etc.
Our past is a prediction of our future. This is SO powerful. If we donât change our thinking, we cannot change our behaviour. No one likes being angry, fearful, sad, guilty or hurt. We wouldnât consciously choose to stay like that, unless we didnât know there was a way to get rid of those destructive beliefs and the addiction our body has to our physical reaction, and we knew it was safe to do so.
The key is that we actually DID (and do) choose this, our decision to protect ourselves by staying the same is very conscious. We decided that, for example, âif I am really angry people will leave me aloneâ, or âIâll get my own wayâ, or âI wonât have to do anything I donât want to doâ..
Part of us knows we GAIN something from staying the same. Itâs our protection mechanism, and however harmful, thatâs exactly what we are all wired to do. When we were little, we adopted some pretty unhealthy coping strategies in order to survive at the time.
We think that our deepest fears, (the things that keep us up at night, or lead us to addictions, loneliness, erratic behaviour, people pleasing, burnout etc), are insurmountable and unhealable, or that weâll be judged, ridiculed, or humiliated by bringing them to light.
I can tell you right now itâs the complete opposite. Holding on to âitâ, refusing to heal, will cause you more harm, distress and mistakes than you could imagine. And it will keep you small, sad and unfulfilled, no matter how much you insist youâre just fine. What do you think those chemicals are doing to your body, your heart, your other vital organs? Also remember: what you donât heal in yourself youâll hand to your children..
Itâs important to note that you get to stay *insert your pattern here* or whatever is that youâre using to cope. No one can make you want to change that. Itâs yours to hold on to if youâre convinced itâs working for you.
Or you can let it go. You can flick a switch in your beautiful brain and make new, much yummier, cocktails, with no emotional hangovers and no going back to old patterns. Howâs that sound?
We think we are protecting ourselves by staying the same. My question is, whatâs it really costing you, and what would be possible for you if you decided to let it go and learn a healthier way of being?
