'All boxers are used. I realized that I would be used during my professional career, because so many people have to take their cut of the money a boxer earns. But I only wanted to be used to a certain extent. I wanted to ensure that I maintained a clearly defined percentage of whatever I earned, and that I had control over my own destiny.'

'Boxing is one of the few sports that welcomes back its retirees even though they're far from what they used to be. In team sports, an athlete's comeback usually ends because he can no longer earn a spot on the roster. But because a boxer's marketability is as important as his ability to hook off the jab, a big-name fighter can usually find himself a promoter willing to take a chance on him again. As for the boxers themselves, some miss the glory, while others need the money. Some just don't know what to do with themselves or how to replace the natural high they get from hard physical competition. For me, the simple answer was pure dollars and cents.'

'Before every fight I say a little prayer. I ask God to give me the strength to do my best. He has given me extraordinary skill in my profession. I ask Him to protect me from serious harm. I ask Him to protect my opponent from the same thing. I ask him to give the people to get what they paid to see. l ask Him to allow me to perform so that everybody is satisfied.'
