Breaking News: Chemawa Indian School has hired Dwayne Nowlin as head basketball coach for the upcoming 25-26 season. The Chemawa athletics program has been in search of coaches to fill several positions for some time, in hopes of rebuilding a successful athletics program. Nowlin will bring 30+ years of experience and a well respected mentoring talent to help the schools student athletes succeed. "In my 30 years of coaching this could be my biggest challenge," Nowlin said. "But it's not about winning or losing," he added, "It's about being a positive role model." Nowlin has earned tremendous respect throughout the years most recently as the head coach of the St Paul baseball program. After taking over in 2018 Nowlin has helped to build Buckaroo baseball into one of the highest level programs in the state, mentoring players and providing a positive influence in their lives. Don't worry Bucks fans, Nowlin has no intention of leaving and will return in the spring to coach at St Paul.
Chemawa brings a new host of challenges to the table for Nowlin who's coaching methods are well suited for the job. With kids that live on campus the logistics provide limited opportunities to interact with positive role models. Nowlin hopes to change that. "I didn't realize that the kids come from all over the United States to live there," he explained, "They stay here all year, away from their parents, and only go home for a month during Christmas. I don't think people realize that."
This presents an especially hard job for a basketball coach since this is when most teams are practicing. But Nowlin says he's ready for the challenge. "This is my 30th year coaching high school sports so I'm up for it." he added.
We here at Gameday are thrilled to see Coach Nowlin's dedication and positive impact expand throughout the community. We've added the Braves to our coverage list and look forward to checking in as the season develops. Good luck Braves!
