Today we are celebrating the men who work for Hospice Isle of Man on International Men’s Day 2024!

The day aims to promote positive male role models and celebrate men’s contributions to the workplace and the wider community.

Today, we’d like to focus on Nick Moorhouse. Nick is superhuman and has two roles here at Hospice; he has worked within our facilities team since 2022, and as our Social Gents Coordinator since May this year. We thought today would be the perfect day to introduce you to Nick in relation to our Social Gents group.

1. What is the purpose of the Social Gents group?
The group was set up to catch bereaved men that have fallen away from traditional support and would not feel that they were supported in the same way as others. As a bereaved man myself I, like others, find it difficult to talk about personal loss and be given a safe medium to do so. Our ‘Social Gents’ platform is safe, very welcoming and we have good biscuits.

2. Why is the group so important to the men that attend?
The group offers a safe space where men can show vulnerability with no fear of judgement or guilt plus we have a good laugh whenever possible. We talk about lots of things and opinions sometimes differ but it’s more like a ‘Brotherhood’ than a group and we all matter.

3. What’s your favourite thing about working at Hospice?
There is a theory that if you surround yourself with amazing people, it will help bring out the best in yourself, so I suppose my favourite thing about working for Hospice is the people, I am a very lucky man.

4th trip to donate blood since I started in 2021. Seems like such a simple thing but they are always in need of more blood and are all so lovely and good at what they do. Only a small bit of discomfort and it could save a life. Proud to spread the word and encourage as many people as I can to donate. Also….you get a brew and some biccies afterwards 😊🙏 All blood is collected on Island and stays here ❤️
