Bipartisan PA Hunter Education Bill Sits In State Senate. Why?
The Pennsylvania House overwhelmingly approved legislation that would allow schools to offer voluntary Hunter-Trapper Education to students in grades 6 through 12. The vote wasn’t close. 180 representatives voted yes, while only 22 voted no. The bill would give students an opportunity to complete the state’s required hunter education course while learning about firearm safety, hunting ethics, wildlife conservation and responsible outdoor recreation.
But now the bill is sitting in the Pennsylvania Senate Education Committee, where it was referred on July 9. The committee is chaired by Republican Sen. Lynda Schlegel Culver, and so far HB 2460 has not been brought up for a vote. The legislation has already demonstrated strong bipartisan support in the House, but it still needs to make it through the Senate before it can become law.
So here’s the question: Why is a hunter education bill that passed the House 180–22 still sitting in the Senate? Pennsylvania already has successful school-based archery programs, and supporters say this legislation could give more young people access to hunter safety and conservation education.
