The motorbike sits patiently at the opening of the narrow trailhead. The precarious entrance into the woods immediately shoots uphill and disappears under the shade of the canopy. The knobblys digs into the dirt as the rider releases the clutch and hammers the throttle. Rider and bike shoot into the forest and ascend the jagged terrain. Suspension bouncing over loose and embedded rocks, the bike never loses traction and maintains forward momentum. Entrenched, the well-used trail has sunken below the surrounding earth, there is no escape from this gnarly minefield. Staying loose, the rider must negotiate a banking turn to the left followed by another to the right and through a narrow passage between the terrestrial wall and a colossal boulder. Maintaining momentum and traction in the dicey vertical gash, rider and bike are delivered to a horizontal plane then on to the next adventure…

Update The Date! Pull out those erasures and pencil in the updated date for our new Singing Hills Jamboree held on September 24-26, 2027!

One of our NEW ONES and still in development...We will head back to the Wildcatters Base Camp for a different event that will fully take advantage of the trails on the 225 acres that is the Singing Hills property.

There will be a friendly recreational tournament on the property to include several different classes: Junior Pitbike, Senior Pitbike, Little Bike (i.e. Honda Monkey, Grom, etc.), Dual Sport, and ADV. But we will also include open riding sessions throughout the weekend! This one is for people who always wanted to try trail racing but never did or if you are looking for something different in an ADV and Dual Sport event.

The History of the Jamboree...If you've been around for a while you might recognize that name, but how far back do you go? Back in 2022 we ran an event called the Bald Eagle Jamboree ADV Rally. It was a super fun event to run but due to many factors it was the one and only event in that Bald Eagle State Forest area (we are developing a NEW Bald Eagle Bash Guided ADV Tour for 2027!).

That same year we ran a small-scale event near Marienville in the Allegheny National Forest (ANF) but called it by a different name. In 2023 I decided to make the ANF our new home for the Jamboree and had a ton of fun over the next few years. For many reasons we decided to scrap the Allegheny Jamboree and switched over to our first annual Wildcatters ADV Rally near Titusville, PA this year.

After the success of the Wildcatters and the desire to use that PHENOMENAL property for another event I decided to recycle that old Jamboree name and created The new Singing Hills Jamboree. I am calling it a "tournament" but the main thing is to have fun and give people the opportunity to try something different...whether that is a mock race, riding your Honda Grom (or similar) in a way unintended by the engineers, or if you want to challenge your off road skills on an ADV bike. The format for this one is still being developed but we have a year to figure it out!

Only 2 Group ADV & Dual Sport Riding Clinics left this year!

A LADIES ONLY Level 1 Riding Clinic with special guest co-coach Melissa Fike this autumn! We will run the Clinic in Fools Ride Territory near Richmond, Ohio on September 26-27.

Level 2 Intermediate+ Clinic on September 19-20!

The Level 1 course is designed for Beginner to Intermediate, Clutch Capable riders that are looking to gain experience and basic skills for dirt and gravel roads. Clutch Capable refers to the rider having experience and comfort with basic operation of the motorcycle. This course is ideal for returning riders, street riders new to ADV, riders looking to brush up on skills & techniques, riders looking for new or different techniques, and riders looking for real-time feedback & coaching. The Level 1 Clinic is not “off road” training but uses basic off road techniques to help improve overall non-pavement riding and build confidence within the rider and in their bike.

The Level 2 course is designed to be more off-road leaning and aggressive gravel experience compared to the Level 1. Where our Level 1 is intended to break down individual theories and techniques the Level 2 is designed to combine multiple things and introduce new, more difficult skills. The terrain and obstacles become more aggressive and there are more off road areas utilized compared to our Level 1 during the second session. We expect riders to have the fundamentals and similar experience level from our Level 1 Clinic when participating in the Level 2. Our goal is for riders to get the most out of our Clinic, enjoy the experience, and gain skills so it is imperative that riders have the appropriate familiarity before signing up for our Level 2.

Reach out to [email protected] to set up a Private Clinic!

We also offer private 1 and 2 day Clinics, 1 person or 1 person with 1-2 buddies. Private Clinics have a similar set up as the group clinics but we can work on things specifically desired. We can do a Level 1, Level 2, combination of the two, or a more advanced session depending on what the rider(s) wants to cover.

The Final Wailin Wayne Weekend guided ride.

My loop was built to be an adventurous tour of Wayne National Forest, this diverse route covers a twisty slice of the Ohio's Windy 9 Triple Nickel, picturesque stretches of forest service gravel, beautifully ugly unmaintained dirt roads, and challenging sections of the Monday Creek Trails. This 100 mile loop was built to showcase ADV riding in the beautiful hills of Wayne and give our Wailin' Friends a chance to challenge their “ADV Dual Sporting” skills.

The Zone. The place in your mind where everything melts away to hyperfocus on the task at hand.

In football, between the whistles all outside sounds fade away. The only thing filling your ears is the cadence, the audibles, the sounds of cleats digging into the field and the crunch of pads hitting your current nemesis. Your mind consumed in the tasks at hand.

In track, the focus narrows to your breathing, your stride, your pace, your heart, your destination. Nothing else. The tasks at hand consume every thought, muscle, and moment.

In powerlifting, aided by the cheers of your teammates every fiber and synapse is used to focus the energy into the muscle groups required to push and pull the cold steel. ATP utilized through a hyperfocused mind consumed by the task at hand.

The mechanized rider, equipped with the motorbike of choice, must stay in the zone while the large bike through the challenging terrain. Consumed in the tasks at hand, the rider must hyperfocus attention on every nook and cranny of the rugged surface and utilize muscle memory while flicking the bike to and fro. The power of the bike, the power of the mind, the power of ATP. Each hand, each arm, each leg, core, mind, and bike...all must flow in a coordinated dance if the pair wishes to remain, in The Zone.

Attitude is everything…

If you want to take an ADV bike off pavement you must have a willingness to fall and a positive attitude. You have to be willing to push the limits of your bike and your skills. If you don’t believe in your head and in your cojones that you can do something then do yourself a favor and don’t even attempt it, you will fail. You have to believe that you can do something and visualize victory if you want to succeed. But guess what, sometimes you will still falter. The key is that you have to have the attitude that everything is a learning experience that will eventually make you a better rider.

People join the ADV community for the sense of adventure as well as to challenge themselves physically and mentally. It is not easy and not everyone can do it or wants to, to each his/her own. The only way to find out if you can is to take the plunge and give it a try. Stay positive, pay more attention to the small victories over the bad stuff and learn from your own mistakes (and from the mistakes of others). That being said, you should perform an after action report after each ride, what went well and what didn’t. Do the good stuff again and again (muscle memory comes from repetition). Learn something from what didn’t and make adjustments for it the next time.

A couple paragraphs from an article I put together back in 2018 for the Bike Bandit Blog (for those who have not been around for a while that was an online retailer similar to RevZilla, MotoSport, or Rocky Mountain). Before I had even thought of the Experiment, I was a guest writer for a couple places as well as a BDR Ambassador. As I gained confidence in the saddle; scouted out the amazing terrain in Fools Ride Territory near the Northeast Ohio River Valley, Northwest Pennsylvania and the Allegheny National Forest, The PA Wilds including the Bald Eagle State Forest area; and started to attend some regional events the seeds of Appalachian ADV were being planted. As I started to develop routes in the region I was also gaining a sense of how I would want to run a rally and a tour.

Winter 2019, Appalachian ADV was born via a website and articles. Spring 2020 our first Rally (intended to be Fools Ride) is delayed because of COVID. Summer we run the first official Rally near Richmond, Ohio and our first PA Wilds Tour. Each year we add more Events including starting to run Riding Clinics in 2022. As I set my sights on 2027 we are looking to continue expanding and building the Community. Appreciate everyone that has come along for the ride...
