Days are recapped at the ramp and there’s nothing better. Sometimes you get them and sometimes you don’t. But smiles are always wide and just knowing you had the opportunity to be on the water with friends is plenty god enough.

She came to Montana for one season. Thirty-seven years later she's still here... cooking, hunting, running the business, and feeding anyone lucky enough to find their way to her table.
This is Joanne's story. Swipe to meet her.

Joanne's story has been beautifully told by in Magazine. Much of what you'll find in these slides was inspired by his writing. The full piece is linked on our website and worth every word.

Before there were cabins, there was a plan to stay for one season and head back to New Hampshire.

That was thirty-four years ago.

In the early days Joanne held four jobs at once... teaching at the Yaak one-room schoolhouse, pulling beer on weekends at the Red Dog saloon, holding a real estate license, and building the foundation of what would become Linehan Outfitting. All of it at the same time, in one of the more remote corners of the lower forty-eight.

Twenty-six years ago she and Tim built three handcrafted log cabins on their property in the heart of the Yaak Valley. They borrowed what they could and worked as hard as they knew how.

Those cabins are still here. So are Tim and Joanne.

A few fly fishing and cabin packages remain for 2026.

This was one of those days that rarely happen. Matt T. and his son Cole both scored on terrific bears in a span of six hours! Guide Nate Peltier worked his tail off.

It’s a process to get one animal caped and packed out of the woods but prepping and packing two is a big deal.

We can never promise success here at Linehan Outfitting. Again, what we can and will promise is that we’ll work hard each and every moment of your hunting or fishing adventure here at Linehan Outfitting.

We thought that having a mild winter would cause bears to come out of hibernation early. And while the basins and back country glades have greened up considerably, we’re having a great season.

This boar had literally just come out of the high country snow and likely his den, Guide Sean McAfee and guest Jacob found him in a cool, dark, boggy area chomping on fresh, green grass.

Sometimes we think we know what to expect and end up being surprised.

I’ve been hunting and fishing with Paul A.for over twenty-five years. He’s one of the most experienced outdoorsman I know. He approaches every day with the same attitude. He goes fishing. And he goes hunting.

Like the rest of us he’s after success. But there’s no disappointment in his life if it doesn’t happen. He’s in the moment and gets tremendous joy from being on the water or in the woods.

This day, we enjoyed success. And this brown dog in particular, sniped in less than a foot of water with a dry fly, was all we needed for the day.

Big barking brown dog short leashed off the porch by Ron L.

This guy tail walked and thrashed in 18” of water and all we could do was laugh. And ain’t that the point of being out there anyway?

Some days are better than others. Have fun. Laugh. Keep trying. It’s a process. At times I feel like I’ve conquered the trout gods. And then…not.

In the end, we go fishing.

The Kootenai is about to change in a big way.

Flows are ramping up to full powerhouse capacity beginning Monday night — 10,000 cfs climbing to 25,000 cfs by Tuesday morning. Don't expect fishable conditions for at least a few days after that. When flows jump this dramatically it takes fish time to find new holding lies.

Once the river settles, look for fish in back eddies, soft areas, and long slow runs. At 25,000 cfs there is no wading. Compressed currents, mini whirlpools, and big standing waves are not to be messed with. Be careful out there.

The good news is that before Monday the river is at 10,000 cfs and in great shape.

Hatches firing around 2:00 pm, dry fly window open until about 5:00. Nymphing strong all day. Coffee colored Pat's stonefly with a perdigon. You know the drill.

The Kootenai remains closed from Libby Dam to the Fisher River bridge until June 1.

As for my Red Sox... sitting at 23-31 and still giving me fits. That said, offense is picking up and today we beat the Braves 8-0. The Braves are a good team. Man for man this roster is strong. We just need the offense to start producing consistently. Go Sox!
