The Kootenai is about to change in a big way.
Flows are ramping up to full powerhouse capacity beginning Monday night — 10,000 cfs climbing to 25,000 cfs by Tuesday morning. Don't expect fishable conditions for at least a few days after that. When flows jump this dramatically it takes fish time to find new holding lies.
Once the river settles, look for fish in back eddies, soft areas, and long slow runs. At 25,000 cfs there is no wading. Compressed currents, mini whirlpools, and big standing waves are not to be messed with. Be careful out there.
The good news is that before Monday the river is at 10,000 cfs and in great shape.
Hatches firing around 2:00 pm, dry fly window open until about 5:00. Nymphing strong all day. Coffee colored Pat's stonefly with a perdigon. You know the drill.
The Kootenai remains closed from Libby Dam to the Fisher River bridge until June 1.
As for my Red Sox... sitting at 23-31 and still giving me fits. That said, offense is picking up and today we beat the Braves 8-0. The Braves are a good team. Man for man this roster is strong. We just need the offense to start producing consistently. Go Sox!
