The Ian Holt Memorial Alumni Hockey Games, a tradition in Woodstock for the past 17 years, have been cancelled due to the pandemic. The games have become a holiday tradition for hockey playing alumni, their families and the broader community, evolving from a single, pick-up style game with 20 players to a two-game event with two games - one for men and one for women - with over 60 participants and hundreds of spectators. The organizers feel cancelling the games was the prudent thing to do so as to safe guard the players and community given many alumni travel home from out of state.
The Games were established as an opportunity to bring alumni together and as a fundraiser for Woodstock Youth Hockey (WYH) and Union Arena. Returning alumni remember skating at the outdoor rink on Vail Field with its numerous limitations (snow, rain, temperature, wind, ice conditions, etc.) when teams would be happy to play a 6-game season. Most alum never realized the reality of Union Arena and are grateful it is here for their younger counterparts and have been generous in their support over the years. Given the reduced business at the Arena due to the pandemic, and also that the Arena is looking for additional fundraising opportunities, we are especially grateful for our alumni’s continued generous support.
WYH and Union Arena are major community assets and we want to assure they are here for generations to come. All past players, alumni and community members are encouraged to visit the Union Arena Web page (www.UnionArena.org) and consider a contribution.
The organizing committee looks forward to the 18th Ian Holt Memorial Alumni Games on Sunday, December 26, 2021.
