Spotlight Coach: Coach Madden 🤼‍♂️🔥

Coach Madden has been part of the wrestling community since a young kid, giving back and shaping the next generation every step of the way. From mentoring countless athletes in the WPAL group to recently coaching the 25–26 season at Douglass‑Lee Middle School Wrestling, the impact speaks for itself.
We are proud and honored to have Coach Madden as part of our wrestling family. 💪🤼‍♀️

Bio:
I joined wrestling at the age of 5, back when this club was known as Big Kahuna. I joined because of my older cousin, and I really enjoyed it, I went on to wrestle on and off throughout elementary school. When I was in 7th grade, my passion for the sport really grew. I got to wrestle for my dad, and it made the sport like a sanctuary for me, although unfortunately, my middle school experience cut short halfway through due to COVID.
Then high school came around. I wasn’t the greatest at first, but by my junior year, I started putting in the work and came within a couple of wins of making it to Masters that year. Unfortunately, my final season was cut short at the beginning due to a torn meniscus, which kept me out for the entire season. All of my dedication and hard work has been in honor of Coach Ed, who passed away shortly before my freshman year. He was my coach for roughly 10 years and a very close mentor to me. He was always an inspiration, and I strive to be a mentor to these wrestlers just as he was to me

🏆 Spotlight Coach: Coach Mike 🏆
We have been proud to have Coach Mike as part of our Woodland wrestling community since 2021. Making an impact on and off the mat! 💪🤼‍♂️

Bio:
In 1992, Mike returned to the sport he loved—this time as a coach. Over the next several decades, he coached at three Fremont high schools: Washington, American, and Irvington. After retiring and relocating to Woodland in 2021, he joined the coaching staff at Pioneer High School, serving as an assistant coach from 2022 through 2026.

Beyond high school coaching, Mike dedicated 21 years to USA Wrestling as a Bronze‑certified club coach. He worked with four clubs: the Fremont Freestylers, the Tri‑City Blackhawks, the East Bay Freestylers, and the Woodland Police Activities League (WPAL), helping develop athletes across multiple generations.

One of Mike’s most notable coaching achievements came in 1997 and 1998, when he guided Melanie Macari to the Women’s 143‑lb Freestyle Cadet National Championship, along with California State titles in both the Cadet and Junior divisions. Earning all three titles in a single year—two state championships and a national championship—is known in California USA Wrestling as “The Triple Crown,” a rare and distinguished accomplishment.

Across his years as an athlete, coach, and mentor, Mike has left a lasting impact on the wrestling communities of Fremont and Woodland, shaping young athletes with the same passion and dedication that first drew him to the mat.
