BTS: the design racetrack of creating “Plant Outfits” for sanctuary gardens.

This happens only after field trips to talk with fav growers and setting clear expectations about those Pinterest images with my clients. IYKYK

I’m pretty OG old school that way… like in floral design, creativity is sparked by seeing and touching the plants - with my hands, real time - together à la the famed “Red Bird” layout right there at the nursery… yes, sometimes in the aisle (pardon me) or on the cart.

And the goal is always… increasing the restorative (aka healing) effect on person, place and community.

And those sanctuary plant outfits have just enough structure so the nervous system can settle AND just enough wildness so the soul can breathe and the heart delights. 🫶

March marched right on outta here.

Took with it a flash of events, flowers, garden design consults, field prep, pump work, goodbye to our beloved Teeny Queenie La Catta cat, baseball tryouts (for , not me), the flower farm’s debut at NY Fashion Week, and seed starting - not to mention the kick off for some delightful design projects (hints: ☕️🌳🐇⛪️🛐).

Big decisions made along with memories.

AJ Heer, the farm’s co-founder and ‘s Gpa often said: “take good care of the farm, and the farm will take good care of you”.

This land is healing. I’m grateful. And as we figure out more and more the nexus of flower farming, sanctuary garden design and healing, there will be more flowers and experiences.

Untamed beauty. Blooming freely.

This month’s arrangement celebrates the first true breath of spring - golden cups of daffodils gathered in a loose, garden-style composition that brings the light and promise of the season indoors.

Flowers are a noun and a verb around here - self love ritual for welcoming the turning of the year.

Hellebore. I’ve used this perennial so many times over the last near-30 years in planting design. I was there when cultivar ‘Jacob’ and ‘Pink Frost’ were first available to design with.

And so I did, mass planting them in one client’s garden and told that they were saving her from the heavy impacts of S. A. D. Hellebore the mysterious harbinger of healing (dating back to 400 BCE).

Today’s floral arrangement is intended to continue this healing work and flower’s magic for my customer - freeing up some pre-spring garden bloom resilience and reflection.

Whether we design gardens or bouquets, the balance of polarity - of light and dark - of highs and lows - of masculine and feminine - of ego and compassion - of trend and intention - is always at play.

As in the garden, so too in life.

So someone told me that they liked watching me create my floral work. That it was like watching puppies play.

So I did what any polished unfluencer Gen Xer (who still thinks that social media is quite weird dude) would do: I filmed my creative process with the idea of sharing this Zen sort of thing.

No matter. Kind of life in imitating art or art imitating life?
