The Virginia Youth Soccer Association mourns the passing of John Douglas “Doug” Engstrom, a respected referee, mentor, and member of the Virginia-DC Soccer Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
A Life Dedicated to Service
A decorated United States Marine Corps veteran, Doug dedicated more than 30 years to serving his country before continuing his commitment to others through soccer.
A Lasting Impact on Virginia Soccer
Doug began refereeing at age 41 with Prince William Soccer and went on to officiate at the youth, amateur, collegiate, and professional levels. Over 22 years of youth soccer officiating, he became a respected figure on fields throughout Virginia and the surrounding region. In 2000, at age 53, he earned the prestigious distinction of USSF National Referee and was later recognized as a National Emeritus Referee in 2006.
A Legacy of Mentorship and Excellence
Beyond his accomplishments on the field, Doug was known for sharing his knowledge and encouraging fellow officials.

1:30 PM — Graveside Service, National Memorial Cemetery at Quantico
Reception to follow at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
