Team 3 brought the season to close today at the AHSAA State Championships in Oakville, AL. Team 3 closed with strong performances from our two men’s individual qualifiers. ML Whitehead finished his freshman season 37th out of 155 competitors with a personal course PR of 18:56. Noah Patton closed his sophomore season with a strong performance of 20:26.

The ladies capped the season off with a 6th place finish in the championship race. They finished as the 2nd ranked public school in the state.

Freshman, Audrey Patton continued her run of spectacular finishes with an 11th place overall finish out of 133 competitors with a time of 21:05 earning her a place on the All-State team.

Team 3 will host their annual banquet tomorrow afternoon to celebrate the season and begin to look forward to what’s ahead. 🏴‍☠️ 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

Team 3 was back on the course this morning for what equates to an XC playoff competition at the Class 3A Section 4 meet. The cold, wet and windy morning yielded many of Team 3’s season bests. Team 3 boasted individual champions, gold medalists, and individual and team qualifiers. It also handed us some heartbreak.

The ladies started the morning at 9:30 AM and performed at a high level. After battling back and forth in the first two miles for the race lead with Colbert Height’s Ellyn Moore, Audrey Patton found another gear and pulled away in mile 3 for a commanding 18 second lead winning her second meet of the year. Her career best time of 20:39 would earn her the 3A Section 4 female championship and gold medal finish. Jolene Ballard finished 7th overall with a career best 22:23 earning herself a top 10 medalist finish. Stella Walker finished 12th overall with a career best 23:40 and Audrey Spillers finished close behind her in 13th overall at 23:48. Emmie Spillers rounded out the top 5 scorers for the ladies finishing 21st overall with a time of 25:14. The Pirates finished in second place with a team score of 47 narrowly being edged out for the Section 4 team championship by Colbert Heights. The ladies had 5 runners with PRs.
Audrey Patton PR 20:39
Jolene Ballard PR 22:23
Stella Walker PR 23:40
Jala Kate Gibbs PR 28:02
Daisy Millwood PR 32:54
The ladies enter next Saturday’s State Championship meet ranked 5th in the state in 3A.

Sadly, the guy’s team season would come to an end today. They were edged out of the 4th qualifying spot by Rogers in a 2 pt difference (129 to 131). The disappointment though was not for lack of effort. Seven of the men’s ten team members finished the race with a PR. ML Whitehead lead the men with a career PR of 18:49 finishing 8th overall and earning a Top 10 medalist spot as well as an individual State Qualifier spot. Noah Patton finished 17th overall with a season PR at 19:24. This earned Patton an individual State Qualifier spot. Gunner Cagle ended his career with Winfield City XC finishing 3rd on his team with a career PR of 21:07. We will miss Gunner’s leadership in the coming seasons and can’t wait to see what he accomplishes in Indoor and Outdoor Track this season. The PRs for the guys were:
ML Whitehead PR 18:49
Noah Patton PR 19:25
Gunner Cagle PR 21:07
Ridge Miles PR 23:09
Easton South PR 23:13
Sawyer Rogers PR 23:24
Hudson Farris PR 25:23

Team 3 was back in action this evening running in the Northwest Alabama Championships at Oakville. This year the NWACs were more important than ever before. This year, they also served as the very first ever Marion County XC Championships. The sport of XC has grown in Marion County over the last several years with several county teams exhibiting excellence every meet. It was time.

For the men, Hamilton, likely on its way to a 3rd consecutive 4A State Championship, took the top spot. Marion County turned in a strong performance finishing second. Josh Webb finished as the men’s individual county champion. ML Whitehead (19:23) and Noah Patton (19:38) led the Pirate men with sub 20 minute performances.

For the ladies, the Winfield Pirates took the top spot. Marion County finished a close second. Audrey Patton (21:15) finished first overall and becomes the first ever female Marion County Champion.

It’s been 2 years since Team 1 took to the course at Sokol Park in Tuscaloosa. Team 3 made sure this morning that they returned with a purpose.

The challenge for the week was to find growth in discomfort. The challenge for the team was to make themselves as uncomfortable as they possibly could from the start. This mindset yielded 13 total PRs and 3rd place finishes for the ladies and the JV!

The ladies finished in 3rd overall and saw two runners make top 15 (Audrey Patton 3rd) (Jolene Ballard 11th) The ladies finished with 4 PRs

Jolene Ballard PR: broke thru the 23 minute mark with a 22:33
Emmie Spillers PR: broke the 25 mark with a 24:35
Lily Jungles PR: cut a minute off of her previous best at 32:02
Audrey Spillers matched her season best at 24:05
Jala Kate Gibbs ran 29:08 after a week of sickness to round out the ladies times.

The men had 6 PRs!
ML Whitehead PR: finally broke that 19 minute barrier a career best 18:56
Noah Patton PR: broke the 20 minute mark for the first time this season at 19:43
Max Muck PR: took almost 40 seconds off his career PR with a 21:18
Ridge Miles PR: keeps shaving chunks of seconds off his PR and finished at 23:20
Easton South PR: knocked 27 seconds off his career best at 24:30
Draven Bowles PR: continues to progress knocking almost a minute off his season best at 24:32
Our only senior, Gunnar Cagle, gutted an impressive 22:34 on a hurt knee to round out our varsity men.

Team 3 was back in action this morning at the Leeds Invitational. The Leeds course is always a challenge with a collegiate course feel with multiple water crossings and a tactical layout that rewards strategy as much as strength. The Pirates competed as the only 3A program in a field of AHSAA big boys (and girls).

The ladies finished in 5th place out of 16 teams behind 6A Springville, 5A Briarwood Christian, 4A Alexandria and only 1 point shy of 4A Ashville.

Audrey Patton finished in the top 20 of the ladies race finishing in 16th place overall. The ladies had 2 runners finish with PRs:
Emmie Spillers PR
Lily Jungles PR
