5 Ways Successful Athletes Deal with Losing Streaks

Focus on Controllables – Successful athletes don’t waste their mental energy on aspects outside of their control. Instead, they shift their attention to areas of performance within their control, such as effort, preparation, recovery, attitude, focus, mindset, and ex*****on. Control creates stability during periods of adversity and reduces anxiety.

Actively Seek Feedback – Successful athletes are not afraid of criticism. Instead of avoiding feedback, successful athletes seek advice from their coaches and teammates. They look to identify small adjustments that can improve performance and lead to breakthroughs.

Manage Their Emotions – Successful athletes understand that frustration, embarrassment, and self-doubt are common during losing streaks. Rather than burying their emotions, they acknowledge and process them without letting them influence their decisions or impact their confidence.

Maintain Perspective – Successful athletes don’t define their season or themselves by a few losses, even when they occur consecutively. Instead, they zoom out and take the perspective that setbacks and slumps occasionally happen and can lead to long-term mental and physical development.

Keep Showing Up – Successful athletes continue to practice, prepare, compete, and fine-tune, despite losing streaks. Putting in the work maintains trust in their skills and allows them to play assertively rather than perform cautiously out of fear.
