🌹 WildRoses: My Journey with a Free Spirit
WildRoses was my second rescue. I met her through a local rescue facility and was told she was sweet on the ground but had issues under saddle, particularly rearing. I saddled her up, rode with my instructor on FaceTime, and when she started rearing, I kept my seat and stayed calm. That moment showed me she had potential—I just needed to earn her trust. I decided to take her home.
Her original name was “Dolly,” but it didn’t suit her bold, untamed spirit. After some thought, I chose the name WildRoses—a name that reflected both her beauty and her fire.
At home, I focused first on building a bond. I started in the round pen, then moved to riding around our property. I quickly discovered she was herd-bound and would rush toward the others, ignoring me completely. With guidance from my instructor, I worked on redirecting that energy—trotting away from the herd and calmly walking back. I used a German martingale to help with communication and kept sessions consistent and purposeful.
Little by little, she improved. I rode her around the neighborhood with my family, then took her on a group trail ride. When some of her old habits returned, I kept working—refocusing her mind, helping her relax, and staying patient, even when progress was slow.
Eventually, I brought her to my instructor’s place for more structured training. There, I learned even more about how to prepare her mentally before rides, how to rebuild my confidence, and how to turn her eagerness into partnership rather than resistance. We trailered out to new places, worked through challenges, and grew as a team.
WildRoses became a horse I could ride with confidence—calm, responsive, and connected. The progress we made was hard-earned, and I’m proud of every step we took together.
She taught me resilience, patience, and how to bring out the best in a horse, even when the odds seem stacked against you. I’ll always be thankful for the journey we shared.
