Coach Scott Markland - O Line, Linebackers, and Special Teams Coordinator
1. How long have you been coaching football, and what’s your background in the game?
I’ve been coaching football for 8 Years, and this is year 2 at JHS. I have previously coached at Grafton High School, Berkeley Middle School, and the Fuqua School.
I played Offensive & Defensive Line for 4 years at Sherando High School, where I was all District & 2nd Team All-Region in 2010. I was recruited by several College/Universities and committed to play at Hampden-Sydney College in the Spring of 2011. While at HSC, I was a defensive starter and special team contributor. I was an All-Conference Defensive Tackle in 2013 and Academic All-Conference 2012-2014 for Hampden-Sydney.
2. What’s your coaching philosophy, and what do you emphasize most with your players?
-Better Understanding Leads to Better Ex*****on: From a basic drill to a full special teams play, I try to make sure that my players understand the expectations & responsibilities before we begin. If they understand the purpose behind what we do, it will be executed better both in practice and in games
-Respond to Adversity: In football and in life, things are not going to go how we planned. How we respond in those moments of adversity is who we really are. Will you focus up and let circumstances out of your control go? Or will you let the adverse moment compromise who you are and what you want to achieve?
3. What’s one thing you want our players to take away from this season?
“Take what you do seriously without taking yourself too seriously.”
Too often we beat ourselves up over past mistakes that intimidate us from trying harder when the next opportunity comes around. Football is a serious game, but it is also a fun game. I want our players to take the training, practices, games, and process seriously with full commitment. However, I also want them to remember that this is a game, you are still a kid, and mistakes will happen. Finding fun in the process is the joy of it all.
4. What’s something unique about coaching at Jamestown that excites you?
I love that I get to coach where I work—right in my own backyard! I’ve lived within 5 minutes of JHS for the past 8 years, and now I am working for JHS as a School Counselor and Coach. I love that the kids get to see me as “Mr. Markland” during the school day and “Coach Markland” at practices & games. Coach Markland is sort of my alter-ego. I love getting to serve and mentor across a variety of roles for the kids in my immediate area.
