HONEY, KEESLING EARN WIBL WEEK 2 HONORS

BC Outlaws slugger J. Honey and Enid Flyers pitcher C. Keesling have been selected as the WIBL Player and Pitcher of the Week for Week 2.

Honey earned Player of the Week after a huge performance in BC’s 19-18 extra-inning win over the Wichita Braves.

He finished with three hits, four runs scored, four RBI and two home runs. His biggest swing came in the bottom of the 11th inning, when he launched the game-winning home run to give the Outlaws the walk-off victory.

Keesling earned Pitcher of the Week after dominating Whitewater in Enid’s 8-1 win over the Rapids.

The Flyers right-hander worked six scoreless innings and struck out 13, repeatedly shutting down Whitewater rallies and giving Enid control of the game from the mound.

Both performances stood out in a week filled with big offensive numbers and strong pitching efforts across the league.

BLACK SOX ANSWER EARLY DEFICIT, PULL AWAY FOR 15-5 WIN OVER AEROS

Hibbs-Hooten Baseball Field — Wellington, Kansas

The Wichita Black Sox fell behind almost immediately Saturday afternoon, but the deficit did not last long.

After the Wichita Aeros scored twice in the top of the first inning, the Black Sox answered with eight runs in the bottom half and never surrendered the lead, eventually defeating the Aeros, 15-5, at Hibbs-Hooten Baseball Field in Wellington.

The game ended in the bottom of the seventh when the Black Sox pushed their advantage to 10 runs.

Wichita Aeros came out swinging.

A. Blanco reached on an error to begin the game and F. Leal followed with a single. J. Morales was hit by a pitch, loading the bases and putting immediate pressure on the Black Sox.

C. Portuondo then delivered the first big hit of the afternoon.

Portuondo lined a single to left field, scoring Blanco and Leal and giving the Aeros a 2-0 advantage before the Black Sox had even come to the plate.

The Black Sox defense prevented the inning from becoming worse.

C. Sogard grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, and the Black Sox escaped the inning trailing by only two.

That proved important because the bottom of the first completely changed the game.

D. Chartrand started the comeback with one swing, driving a line-drive home run to left field and cutting the Aeros lead to 2-1.

From there, the inning became increasingly difficult for the Aeros pitching and defense.

J. Easter was hit by a pitch and J. Tointigh walked. After M. McDonald moved the runners with a groundout, J. Hall walked and C. Pate was hit by a pitch.

A balk brought Easter home with the tying run.

The Black Sox then took advantage of a series of defensive mistakes.

J. Garcia reached on a ground ball during a play that included multiple Aeros errors, allowing Hall and Tointigh to score and putting the Black Sox ahead, 4-2.

C. Harper followed by reaching on another error, bringing Pate home.

The inning continued.

M. Loucks walked.

J. Harper walked with the bases loaded, forcing Garcia home.

T. Carpenter followed with another bases-loaded walk that scored C. Harper.

Chartrand, batting for the second time in the inning, was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing home another run.

By the time the Aeros finally recorded the third out, the Black Sox had scored eight times and turned an early 2-0 deficit into an 8-2 lead.

Unlike the first inning, the Black Sox did much of their damage with hits in the second.

Tointigh walked and McDonald singled before Hall lined an RBI single that scored Tointigh.

Pate followed with another single.

Garcia then delivered one of the biggest hits of the inning, driving a double to left field that scored McDonald and Hall.

The Black Sox had added three more runs and suddenly led, 11-2.

The Aeros refused to disappear.

They mounted their best comeback attempt in the top of the third.

Blanco, Leal and Morales all drew walks, loading the bases.

Portuondo was hit by a pitch, forcing Blanco home.

Later in the inning, J. Pedra was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing Leal home.

A passed ball allowed Morales to score another run.

In a matter of minutes, the Aeros had cut the deficit from nine runs to six at 11-5.

That was when B. Grant entered the game for the Black Sox.

Grant immediately stopped the rally by striking out C. Junior to end the third.

That strikeout became the beginning of the best pitching performance of the afternoon.

The Aeros would not score again.

The Black Sox immediately got one of those runs back in the bottom of the third.

Chartrand walked and Easter brought him home with a single, extending the lead to 12-5.

The Black Sox added another run in the fourth.

Hall singled and Pate reached on a dropped third strike. After the runners advanced, C. Harper lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that brought Hall home.

The lead was now 13-5.

From there, Grant took control.

He kept the Aeros scoreless through the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Grant allowed only two hits during his relief appearance, both singles by Morales, and did not issue a walk.

He struck out four while working 4 1/3 scoreless innings.

The Black Sox defense also helped him.

Aeros hitters repeatedly put balls on the ground, but the Black Sox converted them into outs and prevented Wichita from creating another big inning.

The score remained 13-5 through the fifth and sixth.

Then the Black Sox ended it in the seventh.

Hall opened the inning with another single.

Pate was hit by a pitch and Garcia walked, loading the bases.

That brought C. Harper to the plate.

Harper lined a single to center field.

Hall scored.

Pate also came around to score on the play.

Those two runs pushed the Black Sox lead to 15-5 and ended the game.

Hall quietly put together one of the best offensive performances of the afternoon.

He reached base every time he came to the plate, collecting three singles and a walk. He scored four times and also drove in a run during the Black Sox's three-run second inning.

Harper provided the final blow and finished with three runs driven in, including the sacrifice fly in the fourth and the two-run single that ended the game in the seventh.

Chartrand supplied the early power with his first-inning home run and later drew a walk and was hit by a pitch as the Black Sox continually put runners on base.

Garcia delivered the two-run double in the second inning, while Easter added an RBI single in the third.

For the Aeros, Portuondo supplied their biggest offensive hit with the two-run single in the first inning and also drove in another run when he was hit by a pitch during the third-inning rally.

Morales reached base several times and scored during that three-run third.

But the turning point came when Grant entered with the Aeros threatening to climb back into the game.

From that point forward, Wichita did not score again.

The Black Sox had fallen behind 2-0 before recording an out at the plate.

Seven innings later, they walked off the field with a 10-run victory.

Hall was in the middle of the Black Sox offense throughout the afternoon. He reached base in all four of his plate appearances with three singles and a walk, scored four runs and drove in a run. Hall scored during the eight-run first inning, the three-run second, the fourth inning and again on the game-ending hit in the seventh.

B. Grant — Wichita Black Sox

Grant entered with the Aeros having just scored three runs in the third inning and immediately stopped the rally. He then shut Wichita out the rest of the game, working 4 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing only two hits, issuing no walks and striking out four. His relief performance prevented the Aeros from mounting another comeback and allowed the Black Sox to pull away.

GOODFELLAS ANSWER STUNNING COMEBACK WITH 11-RUN NINTH, BEAT WICHITA 21-11

Goodfellas 18O watched a comfortable lead disappear Saturday afternoon, then responded with one of the biggest innings of the young WIBL season, scoring 11 runs in the ninth to defeat Wichita Lineman, 21-11, at Mulvane Sports Complex.

The game featured two completely different stories.

For most of the afternoon, Goodfellas controlled the game behind strong starting pitching and a steady offensive attack.

Then Wichita erupted for seven runs in the eighth inning and suddenly took the lead.

Goodfellas answered immediately.

Goodfellas struck first with three runs in the opening inning.

F. Broce was one of the major forces in the lineup throughout the afternoon. He finished with three hits and five RBI and launched a home run as part of an offensive attack that eventually produced 22 hits.

Goodfellas added another run in the fourth and carried a 4-0 advantage into the middle innings.

Meanwhile, N. Crosby was controlling the Wichita lineup from the mound.

Crosby worked six innings, allowing only four hits and two runs, both unearned. He struck out nine and repeatedly prevented Wichita from putting together sustained rallies.

Goodfellas stretched the lead to 6-0 with two runs in the top of the sixth.

Wichita finally began its comeback in the bottom half.

The Lineman scored twice in the sixth, cutting the margin to 6-2.

Goodfellas added another run in the seventh to make it 7-2, but Wichita answered again.

J. Bragg supplied one of the biggest swings of the comeback, connecting for a home run and helping Wichita score two more runs.

After seven innings, the Goodfellas lead had been reduced to 7-4.

Goodfellas appeared to regain control in the eighth.

Three more runs crossed the plate, pushing the advantage back to 10-4.

With six runs separating the teams and only six outs remaining, the game looked to be firmly in Goodfellas' hands.

Then everything changed.

Wichita sent batter after batter to the plate in the bottom of the eighth and scored seven runs.

D. McCoy was at the center of the Wichita offense.

McCoy finished a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI, a triple and a home run. His production helped transform what had been a six-run deficit into a one-run Wichita lead.

The Lineman also took advantage of walks, hit batters and defensive mistakes as the inning continued.

By the time Goodfellas finally escaped the eighth, Wichita had scored seven times.

A game Goodfellas had led 10-4 had suddenly become an 11-10 Wichita advantage.

It was Wichita's first lead of the afternoon.

Goodfellas had one inning left to respond.

They did much more than simply tie the game.

The top of the ninth became an offensive avalanche.

Goodfellas combined hits, walks and aggressive baserunning as the lineup turned over and the Wichita pitching staff struggled to find the final outs.

A. Razey finished the afternoon with three hits, including two triples, and scored twice.

Crosby contributed three hits and scored three runs.

M. Robertson collected three hits and scored three times.

L. Osburn had four hits, scored twice and drove in two runs.

A. Camfield added two hits, including a double and a triple.

Broce continued his huge afternoon in the middle of the order.

By the time the inning finally ended, Goodfellas had scored 11 runs.

Wichita's dramatic 11-10 lead had been completely erased.

Goodfellas now led 21-11.

The Wichita offense had no second comeback remaining.

Broce finished the game on the mound and shut the door, preserving the victory after also playing a major role in the offensive attack.

The final numbers reflected just how wild the afternoon became.

Goodfellas finished with 21 runs on 22 hits and drew 11 walks.

Wichita scored 11 runs on eight hits.

Goodfellas also received production from nearly every part of the lineup.

Broce drove in five.

Osburn collected four hits.

Razey, Crosby and Robertson each finished with three hits.

T. Hallinger drove in two runs, and R. Rotola Snr also knocked in two.

For Wichita, McCoy delivered the biggest offensive performance with three hits and five RBI, while Bragg homered and drove in two.

The biggest individual pitching performance belonged to Crosby.

His six innings of four-hit baseball kept Wichita scoreless through five and allowed only two unearned runs before he left.

But because Wichita eventually erased the Goodfellas lead in the eighth, Crosby was no longer eligible for the victory.

Broce became the pitcher of record before Goodfellas reclaimed the lead with its 11-run ninth and earned the win.

The loss went to D. McCoy, who began the ninth-inning pitching sequence and was charged with the runs that tied the game and put Goodfellas back in front.

It was a game that appeared settled twice.

Goodfellas seemed to have it under control.

Then Wichita appeared to complete an extraordinary comeback.

But the final answer belonged to Goodfellas.

Eleven runs in the ninth turned a one-run deficit into a 10-run victory.

Crosby delivered six outstanding innings, allowing only four hits and two unearned runs while striking out nine. His performance gave Goodfellas control of the game through the first six innings and was the strongest pitching effort of the afternoon.

HONEY'S 11TH-INNING HOMER LIFTS OUTLAWS OVER BRAVES, 19-18

The BC Outlaws survived one of the wildest comebacks of the young WIBL season Saturday afternoon, defeating the Wichita Braves, 19-18, in 11 innings at Bluestem Ballpark.

For most teams, scoring 13 runs in the first inning would be enough to put a game away.

For the Outlaws, it barely was.

Wichita actually struck first, scoring twice in the top of the opening inning. B. Clark was right in the middle of the early offense, beginning what would become a huge individual afternoon.

Then the Outlaws answered with an inning that appeared capable of ending the competitive portion of the game almost immediately.

BC sent batter after batter to the plate in the bottom of the first and scored 13 runs.

G. Worrell and D. Winter both homered during the massive opening rally as Wichita struggled to find an answer on the mound.

By the time the inning finally ended, BC had turned a 2-0 deficit into a 13-2 lead.

But Wichita never went away.

The Braves scored two more runs in the second inning and added another in the fourth, slowly beginning the long climb back into the game.

After five innings, the Outlaws still held a comfortable advantage, but Wichita continued cutting into it.

The Braves scored two in the sixth, two in the seventh and two more in the eighth.

BC managed to keep some distance by scoring once in the sixth, once in the seventh and three times in the eighth.

J. Honey played a major role in that late insurance, launching a home run in the eighth inning.

That gave the Outlaws an 18-11 advantage heading to the ninth.

Seven runs looked like plenty.

It wasn't.

The Braves produced their biggest inning of the afternoon in the top of the ninth.

Wichita combined four walks with timely hitting, including a double by C. White, as the Outlaws suddenly found themselves unable to record the outs they needed.

One run became three.

Three became five.

And before the inning was finished, Wichita had scored seven times.

The Braves had completed an astonishing comeback from an early 13-2 deficit and tied the game, 18-18.

Clark was one of the biggest reasons Wichita was still alive.

He finished 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two RBI, a double and a home run.

White also had a big afternoon, going 2-for-4, scoring four times and driving in two runs while adding a double.

Konda, hitting ninth, finished 2-for-6 with three runs and three RBI and also homered.

K. Kaku Jr. scored three times and stole three bases as Wichita repeatedly put pressure on the Outlaws defense.

The Outlaws were unable to answer in the bottom of the ninth, sending the game to extra innings.

Neither team scored in the 10th.

Wichita again came up empty in the top of the 11th.

That brought Honey back to the plate in the bottom half.

He did not allow the game to go any farther.

Honey drove the ball out for his second home run of the game, ending the marathon immediately and giving BC a dramatic 19-18 walk-off victory.

It was the perfect ending to an enormous individual performance.

Honey finished 3-for-5 with four runs scored, four RBI, a walk and two home runs.

His first homer helped the Outlaws rebuild their lead in the eighth.

His second ended the game in the 11th.

Worrell also delivered a major offensive performance for BC, collecting two hits, scoring three times and driving in four runs with a home run.

Winter drove in four runs and homered, while L. Wilson added two hits and scored twice.

The pitching numbers reflected just how offensive the game became.

BC starter E. Hodges worked 5 2/3 innings and struck out nine.

For Wichita, B. Ware provided the Braves with badly needed stability after the disastrous opening inning. Ware worked 5 1/3 innings, allowed six hits and struck out nine while Wichita steadily worked its way back into the game.

Kaku Jr. eventually took the loss despite striking out six in 2 2/3 innings.

Honey earned the victory after working in relief and then winning the game himself at the plate.

The final numbers were remarkable.

BC finished with 19 runs on 13 hits.

Wichita scored 18 runs on 12 hits and drew 16 walks.

The Braves trailed by 11 runs after the first inning, fought all the way back to tie the game in the ninth and forced extra innings.

But after more than 10 innings and 36 combined runs, the deciding swing belonged to Honey.
