Good Afternoon Scouts! I sent out an email, but also adding the memo here....
I wanted to get a few reminders and preview of upcoming attractions to help with planning purposes.
January Pack Meeting: We will be having our January Pack Meeting this Thursday, January 30th in the gym. Please bring your pinewood derby cars for impound- we will weight them and pack them away for race day. If you have any squirrel/sibling cars, please bring those as well. We will be doing songs and skits, so remind your scouts we will be doing "No Skit", "Worlds Famous Chocolate" and "Duck Food". Bring your dance moves for Pop-See-Ko as well.
Pinewood Derby: The Derby is scheduled for Saturday, February 1st at the Spellman Center. Mr. Marks sent out a facebook reminder and ask for help for setting up that day. If you can come a bit early and help out to get the day going, please respond on his sing-up genius. Many hands make light work and it should be a fun day for all! As a reminder, for newer scouts, we will have food/concessions available for purchase on race day and please have your scouts in Class A uniforms for the event.
Scout Sunday: Pack 22 has traditionally participated in Scout Sunday at Holy Ghost Church the 1st Sunday of February. We will be participating again this year on Sunday, February 2nd. This is also a Class A uniform event. It is not required for Scouts to attend, but as the church is our charter organization, we do try to have those who are able to attend do so. We meet in the lower level of church, process into the sanctuary and show reverence during the mass. If you are not of the Catholic faith and attend a different home church/religious service, we welcome you to attend there in scout uniform. More details to come on this event for Sunday morning... I will also send out the family discussion on your achievement that coincides with this event to work on independently with your scout as a family discussion.
In other upcoming events, I have scheduled a planned surgery in March. I am expected to be out of commission for at least 3-4 weeks and would like to offer a couple options for those Thursday nights to the group:
Option 1 would be to ask a parent from the group to volunteer to facilitate the meeting in person. I am happy to provide the materials, what would be covered for each meeting out of the curriculum. The dates I would be looking to have covered would be March 13th, March 20st and April 3rd. Pack meeting is scheduled for March 27th (all dens) so there will be a group activity that evening. If you are interested in offering help during 1 (or 3 evenings), please let me know.
Option 2 would be for me to provide materials and activities that you can complete with your scout at home independently as a family on the three den evenings (March 13th, March 20th and April 3rd). I would be creating a "kit" for each scout with their rank specific activities. You would be able to pull out the kit for that night, complete the requirements/activity and report back the scout's experience. This option would be if folks would prefer to not have in-person those nights or if there are no adult volunteers for option 1.
I am happy to coordinate either way, but would like to throw out both options to the group.
I would also like to ask that you spend some time with your scouts this week before Pack Meeting and next week before our next Den meeting discussing appropriate behavior. We are a group of 3 dens, which doubled in size from last year. Scouts can be fun, but I also ask that when they are at meetings that they are also respectful, in behavioral control (as much as we can for 12 kids under 8yo), and listening to directions. If you see that your scout may be struggling to focus, listen to directions or being disrespectful that you please take them aside to remind them of being respectful and then have them rejoin the group. We only have a few months left of the scout year and I want to ensure all scouts are working towards completing their requirements for their next rank and having fun at the same time. If you have any specific concerns about your scout, please feel free to speak with me privately so we can work together to provide them a positive scouting experience.
See you all Thursday and I cannot wait to see all the finished cars!
Thank you!
