Just ask Lightningbirds player Jaclyn Fullerton, whose love for the sport was passed down by her mom, Susie. For Jaclyn, hockey is all about the unique rituals, the lifelong friendships, and the amazing community that welcomes everyone—from absolute beginners to the young girls locking into the sport for life.

Jaclyn's story says it best:

"I cannot express enough how much I love the sport of hockey! What’s super cool is the reason I got into it is because of my mom, Susie Fullerton who actually played with Mia's mom back in the day, Lisa Allen. Hockey is such a legendary sport. It makes me think of golf… there are so many mechanisms and astigmatisms that go into it. Whether it be how early or late you show up for a game (naturally I like to show up late) how you tape your stick, or how you simply put your gear on.

The moment Rachel Walters (Adams) put out that she was bringing back women’s hockey I was on it! I got this feeling in my stomach that I had to do it!

To top it all off, we got women into the sport that never played before and women that didn’t think they needed it as much as they did. We also got young gals to lock in to the sport and stay in it!! Hockey is a community and a loved one at that - you never see disrespect to things or people (unless there’s a rival) and they love their fans! Hockey is a sport that I won’t stop playing until my body tells me I can’t."

Find Your Passion!

Sometimes the best feelings in the world are the ones we reconnect with from our past.

For Erin Portfield, a childhood love for the ice at Wheeling Park never truly faded, and returning to hockey years later has brought back a lifelong connection to an awesome sport.

Erin's story says it best:

"My fondest memories are skating at Wheeling Park at an early age. I started playing hockey at the earliest age you could at that time till the age of 16. I always wished I could have played till I couldn’t in high school. Fast forward, I am playing again and it is the best feeling in the world. I love that I have met up with girls I played with and against in my childhood. There is just something about being able to go play an awesome sport with amazing women. For me playing hockey again is not only great exercise but it helps you forget all the day to day stress that life may throw at you. My advice is just give it a try and give yourself the whole season."

Erin’s journey is a powerful reminder that it is never too late to get back out there. Whether you had to step away after high school or you’re looking to pick up a stick for the very first time, WAHA has a place for you. Beyond the incredible exercise and stress relief, the game brings women together—allowing old friends to skate side-by-side again and new friendships to form on the ice.
