WMS Famlies and Friends,

My business name is a tribute to my mom who was my biggest supporter and sunshine.

Team Goss Squad is lacing up for the 5th time for the 11th annual BrainUp 5K run/walk. On Sept. 19th, 2026 we will run in honor of my mom, Julie, who lost her battle to brain cancer in June of 2023. We invite you all to join us on this truly beautiful day. If you can't make it, then please consider donating to our team page: https://fundraise.givesmart.com/vf/BRAINUP/team/GossSquad (link also in bio). Any dollar, no matter how big or small, makes a difference! 🌻☀💛 . .
BrainUp is dedicated to bringing awareness to brain cancer, a disease that doesn't get the attention it deserves. We reassure patients and families that they are not alone, and we activate community involvement through fundraising events. From helping navigate treatment options to funding cutting-edge research, BrainUp works tirelessly with patients, families, physicians, and research professionals

As a self-rescue instructor, I get asked a lot “will my child really learn how to ‘actually’ swim or will they just know how to self-rescue?” The answer is “Yes, they will learn how to swim!”

At WMS, we shape proper body posturing and arm movement to set children up to be successful swimmers. We eliminate kicking initially as most children tend to “run” instead of kick which causes them to go vertical. As they continue grow and become stronger swimmers, we are able to lengthen their swim before the float. Refresher lessons are highly encouraged every 3-4 months bc we are able to continue building on their skills. Before you know it, your child will be swim-float-swimming down the length of the pool!

My Top 5 Horror Movies as a WMS Instructor:

1. Puddle jumpers / floaties - These devices shape a vertical and head-up position which interferes with the stimulus of the water level rising. Take away the puddle jumpers and the child will sink and have no concept of being in a horizontal swimming or floating position.
2. No adult supervision around water - it is imperative to always assign a designated water watcher who can watch kids around a pool, home spa, lake, ocean, etc. children should NEVER be left alone around bodies of water.
3. Deep bath water - Filling the tub up too deep can interfere with learning how to float. Many times children will lay back in the bathtub on their arms which causes them to actually sink when trying to float in deeper water.
4. Bent Knees/Kicking - At WMS, we do not teach kicking as most children “run” instead of kick in the water which causes them to sink. We focus on arm movement and a nice horizontal posture which is conducive to the swim and the float.
5. Not enrolling in self-rescue lessons - At WMS, we teach life saving skills in just weeks as opposed to traditional lessons which can take years to develop the same skills. Consistency and gaining confidence is key. Enroll your child today!

Happy Memorial Day. May we take today to remember and honor those who have died fighting for our great nation. 🇺🇸

Memorial Day also marks the day when pools open for the season. Make sure to keep the following in mind as we head into pool season!

🐬Designated Water Watcher. If kids are swimming alone, then an undistracted adult should always monitor the pool. The easiest way to watch kids though is to get in the water with them!
🐬Wear Bright Colors to Stay in Sight. Children should wear bright colored swimsuits to easily be spotted. Avoid dark colors, especially blues, so they don't blend in with the water or bottom of the pool.
🐬Avoid Floaties & Puddlejumpers. These "floation" devices undue what your child has/will learn in self-rescue lessons. Floaties and puddlejumpers shape a vertical, head-up position which is not conducive to the swim or float. Try a US Coast Guard (USCG) approved life vest instead.

Happy safe swimming!
