Danell-Stevens Memorial Monument Wreath Laying Ceremony - Saturday October 15, 2022 - 1:00 PM

There will be a Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Danell-Stevens Memorial Monument on Saturday October 15, 2022 at 1:00 PM at the East Mountain Country Club in Westfield. The Danell-Stevens Memorial Monument was erected and dedicated in 2012 to memorialize two US Air Force pilots who lost their lives in the skies over what is today the East Mountain Country Club in Westfield. On October 19, 1952, Lieutenant Robert Danell and Captain Fred Stevens, flying in a foursome of F-86 Sabre jets, were conducting an aerobatic performance to celebrate the new home of the 131st Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Barnes Airport. Near the end of the performance, Lieutenant Danell and Captain Stevens had a mid-air collision which killed both pilots instantly. A crowd of about 5000 people witnessed the accident from the airport.

The ceremony will include a 21 gun salute and the playing of Taps, provided by the Westfield American Legion Post 124. We are also expecting Westfield Mayor Michael McCabe, State Senator John Velis and State Representative Kelly Pease to be in attendance. Also attending will be members of both pilots families. Transportation to the Memorial site on the golf course will be provided.
