Elevated subclinical narcissism is real and can do a lot of damage in relationships when people use narcissisitic tactics to generate self-worth from others. To be clear, many people do not do this “people pleasing - narcissism seesaw” but some do and it is important to name when this is happening to call out the behavior, although when you do, many people can’t see it or confront it because to confront their narcissistic parent would mean having to confront themselves and that is a heavy pill to swallow.
