12TH ANNUAL TOURNAMENT UPDATE!!!
Thanks to all of you that participated in and supported the 12th Annual Joe Godfrey Jr. Memorial Golf Tournament!
In spite of predictions for rain all week, the weather was perfect for our event! Low 80's and mostly sunny right up until we were packing up for the day, when a few clouds and a sprinkle showed up. And I'm told that both a few miles south and a few miles north of us they had heavy rainfall during the day. We were blessed once again by the weather gods.
We are especially thankful to all of our tournament sponsors. Those that sponsored a hole or gave a cash donation, and those that provided us with all of the great golf and door prizes that we received. Over 40 merchants from the Oswego, Mexico and Pulaski areas supported our tournament this year!
A special thank-you to 50/50 winner Jordan Hamilton and the Fortuna Pirates team (skins) for donating their winnings back to the cause.
And speaking of Jordan, I'd like to thank him and his mom, Melissa Hamilton, and Marilyn Wheeler for their help as volunteers for the event. They put in a lot of effort in helping this come off without a hitch.
Through your support we raised $1,291.00 for the Memorial Scholarship Fund this year. This scholarship, as you may know, is awarded to a student or students that have demonstrated kindness and humility during their high school career. It is intended to recognize those students that might not ordinarily be singled out in the traditional scholarship process. As Joe Jr. said, "the kids that aren't the top athlete or at the top of the class academically, but are just good kids doing what they're supposed to." For 2016, two Mexico Academy students, Emma Andrews and Gretchen Arnold, received awards of $1,600 each.
I look forward to next June when we will be selecting our 2017 recipient. I am also beginning to make plans for the 2017 Tournament, expected to be held in early July. We'll post save-the-date information early in 2017.
Thanks again to all,,
Joe
