π 43 children have already lost their lives to drowning in Florida this year, and tragically, 16 of those deaths occurred in May alone.
Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4, and these numbers are a heartbreaking reminder that water safety must be a year-round priority.
The hardest part is knowing that many of these tragedies are preventable.
At AquaSquad Swim, we believe there is no single solution to drowning prevention. Water safety requires multiple layers of protection:
π Constant, undistracted adult supervision
π Pool fences with self-closing, self-latching gates
π Locked and alarmed doors and windows
π Removal of pet doors that lead to pool areas
π Designated Water Watchers
π CPR training for parents and caregivers
π Quality swim instruction focused on life-saving skills
We are not your traditional swim lesson program. Whether your child is enrolled in our Survival Swim program, Mobile Lessons, or Learn-to-Swim Lessons, our focus is always on water safety and life-saving skills first.
We teach children how to:
π Float and breathe
π Find the wall
π Turn to safety
π Swim-Float-Swim
π Build confidence and independence in the water
We also offer CPR certification courses because we believe water safety extends beyond the pool. Knowing how to respond in an emergency can save a life while help is on the way.
No child is drown-proof, and swim lessons should never replace supervision. But giving a child the skills to respond if they unexpectedly enter the water can be one more critical layer of protection.
Drowning is often silent and can happen in seconds. It doesn't just happen during summer vacations or pool parties. It can happen any day, in any season, to any family.
As we head into the busiest swimming months of the year, take a moment to evaluate your family's layers of protection. Check the gates. Review your safety plan. Learn CPR. Prioritize swim lessons.
One child is too many. Forty-three is unacceptable.
