Thank you to the Wellington Daily News for featuring our Fire of Exodus athletes!

It’s exciting to see our athletes’ hard work recognized by the community. Now the focus shifts to Wichita, where we’re just one week away from the AAU Regional Meet. Our athletes will be competing for a chance to earn a spot at the AAU Junior Olympics in Des Moines, Iowa.

Be sure to follow along next week as we’ll be posting daily updates from all four days of the Regional Qualifier and cheering on our athletes every step of the way!

Coaches Corner

Neat facts about our Head Coach, Alisha Dansby Conwell!

Things I get asked, what makes you qualified to coach track and field and why is it your passion?

1. The 1990s: Youth Circuit PowerhouseClub Debut: Began her track journey with the legendary Askia Track Club in Wichita, Kansas, learning structural hurdle and jump mechanics.

Elite National Standout: Traveled to Denton, Texas, to compete in the 1999 USATF Junior National Championships. At just a high school age, she jumped 38 feet, 7.50 inches, securing 6th place nationally against older NCAA freshmen and sophomore athletes.

2. 1998–2000: High School Dominance (Newton HS)

All-Time Record Holder: Set a monumental, undisputed Newton High School record of 39' 5.75" in the triple jump in 1999, a historic record that remains unbroken.

State Championship Podium: Placed 2nd overall in the state of Kansas for Class 5A in 1998 with a 38-foot leap and clocked a top-ranked state time of 15.00 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.

National Recognition: Nominated and featured in the "Who's Who Among American High School Students" for balancing elite multi-classification track rankings with high academic standing.

When she qualified for and traveled to Denton, Texas, the meet she was competing in was a primary national talent pathway. Her appearance there is widely celebrated in local Kansas track circles as an "Olympic-caliber test" because of how the event was structured:

1. The High School Senior Olympic Pipeline
As a high school senior, her massive 39' 5.75" triple jump met the strict national entry standards to compete on the junior national stage. For track and field athletes under the age of 20, this specific championship serves as the primary stepping stone to represent Team USA globally on Junior World and international squads.

2. Going Head-to-Head with College Elites
What made it feel like a true Olympic trial for a high school athlete was the level of competition. She wasn't just jumping against other teenagers; she had to line up against the best NCAA Division I freshmen and sophomores in the United States. Pushing her body to a 38' 7.50" (11.77m) mark under that immense pressure cemented her reputation as an elite, national-tier prospect before she ever transitioned to college.

This paved her way to make a bid for the Olympic trials as a senior in 2000. She'd end up 66th in the nation.

3. 2001–2003: Collegiate Multi-Event Success (Hutchinson CC)Hutchinson Blue Dragons

Her KU Relays MilestonesThe Event:
She represented the Hutchinson Blue Dragons on the track in the grueling 100-meter hurdles.

The Performance: She clocked an official, fully automatic time of 15.26 seconds at the meet.

Historical Rank: This performance at the Kansas Relays was so strong that it remains etched as the #8 fastest 100-meter hurdles time in Hutchinson Community College program history.

The Kansas Relays is one of the oldest and most historic track events in the United States, famously gathering the absolute best high school, collegiate, and professional athletes in the Midwest. Competing and placing on the leaderboards there added another elite layer to her athletic resume.

Leaderboard: Cemented her name permanently onto the Hutchinson Community College Track All-Time Record Charts. The Historic #6 Leap: Jumped 37 feet, 6.75 inches in 2000 and 40 feet in 2001, which remains the #4 and 6 best triple jump in program history.

Multi-Event Prowess: Charted on the outdoor running leaderboards in the grueling 400-meter hurdles (1:13.57) and threw a massive 40 feet, 3.25 inches in the outdoor shot put, successfully qualifying for the NJCAA National Championships.

4. 2016–Present: Founder & Elite Club Coach
Club Launch (December 2016): Returned from her athletic retirement to found the Fire of Exodus Youth Track and Field Club in Wellington, Kansas, expanding it into a sanctioned AAU and USATF program.

Coaching Championships: Spearheaded training structures that produced multiple regional champions, national Junior Olympic qualifiers, and KSHSAA State Track Championship champions (such as sprinter Makhila Maupin and vaulter Belle Cullens).

Collegiate Pipeline Placement: Successfully mentored and built profiles for her local athletes to transition onto active college rosters, spanning from NJCAA programs to NCAA Division II powerhouses like Pittsburg State University.

Besides all of that strong foundation, it's been a complete honor to serve Wellington, KS and surrounding communities! Thank you for entrusting us (all the coaches)/me with helping your children achieve their dreams. I am incredibly blessed to work along side even more talented assistant coaches and staff and will humbly keep serving any who ask and all who come!
