Happy Birthday, “Grim Reap-Her”!

There are some people who work behind the scenes doin’ everything and givin’ to everyone.

She’s one of those.

She helped form MRDR.

She’s been the board secretary since we started last year.

She’s one of our new skater coaches.

She volunteers her time to take new skaters one on one outside of practice.

She shows up and keeps giving her all to everyone around her…

All. The. Time.

Although her Birthday is.. tomorrow.

She JUST GOT ENGAGED, today!

Our Samski is somebody always giving 💯 … no matter where she’s at.

And.. always pushing through whatever life throws her way… making her way toward the light with her bright helmet AND personality. 🤓

At first, she thought she only really wanted that ⭐️ to be a jammer.

But, during our bout with Roughneck Roller Derby… her tune changed!

To paraphrase:

“I thought I only wanted to be a jammer, but… turns out… I really like hitting!”

Atta girl. 😆😏

1600+ miles for one bout?!

“Stormy Vaniels” is a real one.

I couldn’t figure out why someone would travel so far… just for an hour of play time! 🤷🏼‍♂️🫣🧐

Here’s what she said:

“It’s about finding your people.

I’ve never really had a home and have been living nomadically for years now…So, finding people that feel like home is important to me. And a riots get-together feels like home the second you walk in.

Everyone is welcome, everyone is supported, and I feel valued both on and off the track. So why did my crazy ass drive 14 hours to skate? It’s the people, it’s the vibe, it’s the inclusion.

MRDR reminds me why I fell in love with derby in the first place and gave me back something I thought I had lost — confidence, joy, and the feeling of belonging in derby again.”

We met “Spicy Kimchi” because we have a diagnosable Korean food addiction. 😏

Cafe Korea outside of U.S. Army Fort Leonard Wood is our “go-to” spot and her parents owned the restaurant at that time.

We got to know her.

We found out that she:

-worked from home full time
-was sarcastic and witty
-was artistic and nerdy
-was kind and caring
-secretly needed to hit things

That’s when our intentional corruption began. 🧐🫣😎

She’s only been skating with us for less than a year and yesterday was her second bout ever.

“If you give me an option, I’m going to choose not to.” 🤓😆🤷🏼‍♂️

So.. we signed her up.

And.. she love/hated it.

First Husband and Wife Bout!

“I never thought I’d be playing Roller Derby.

“I grew up playing all sorts of sports, including hockey… but since getting out of the Army… there just isn’t access to those types of things anymore.

When my wife Cassie “CassKicker” started playing, I supported her, became a fan, watched her train and before I knew it.. her and a few other players started a new league entirely!

Now we both play and help coach new players as part of an inclusive co-ed league right here in Mid-Missouri. I hope to see more men and women join the league that we formed just over a year ago!”
