I finished my first year of the Masters Walleye Circuit at the World Walleye Championship on Devil's Lake, ND. I'm happy placing 20th out of the top 50 boats this year, especially given this was my first time on Devil's.

Day 1 was windy! We didn't find our big fish, so we went trolling with lead core. Got 5 fish in a few hours, but I got sick and we moved to a calmer spot to finish out the day.

Day 2 was calmer. Trolled the same spot, but with long braid this time. Caught about 10 walleye, but threw many smaller ones back in the morning because we weren't allowed to cull fish. The bite died around 11am and we only came in with 3 nice fish. Trolling motor failed mid-day, so I made the wild call to buy a new one and replace it in the parking lot of our motel. Talk about a long day.

Day 3 was windy again. About the same 38mph winds we had on the first day. We checked our big fish spot and it was empty again. Back to trolling! We got around 10, kept all 5 of the right ones this time.

Total weight of 40 lbs. Should have had a bit more on days 1 & 2. Found a few 5 pounders and one 8 pounder in practice, but couldn't find them on tournament days. That's fishing for you! Can't thank my wife enough for holding down the fort while I chase walleyes. Heading home today on the long 10+ hour drive.

Boat #42 launching in the morning for the Masters Walleye Circuit World Walleye Championship on Devil's Lake. Sounds like the bite has been tough for everyone. We can find fish, but the size has been on the low end aside from a few pigs that come and go. Wish us luck!

We took 5th place in the Cedar Valley Walleye Club tournament on Pool 10 yesterday. I believe 1st - 4th place all had willow cats (walleye candy), while we did not, so that makes me feel slightly better about our performance. 😅

Talk about a grind! I re-tied some lines the night before and I knew I had a sub-par knot. Within the first 30-45 minutes I had a big fish and lost it within seconds. As suspected, my knot failed me. Heartbroken, we kept grinding it out. We found lots of other species, but our walleye were picky. Kendal got the first couple walleye and we were feeling better, until our spot went dormant. So we ran off to our number 2 spot, only a whopping 30 miles (and 2 no-wake zones) away 😒.

We pulled a 23 out of there, so it wasn't for nothing. After an hour or so it was obvious no other active fish were there. We suited up and made the 30 mile run back north, hitting a couple spots on the way. Holy boat traffic on a summer Saturday!

With less than an hour to go, we moved on to a rock pile I have fished for many years that's always held deep fish. 20 minutes before the end of the tournament we got our 5th and final walleye, coming in right around 23".

Some key things we focused on:
- Deeper wing dams, because of low water
- River flow (2-3 speed on trolling motor)
- Live bait while using crank baits
- Proper crank bait depths for each spot

A lot of crazies on the river today... but hey, the fish are biting!
