Stuart Davis was an American painter who integrated jazz into his art. I won’t pursue the music angle in this post, that’s too 2020. What I fancy about Davis is how he painted. Once he found a motif he liked, he would revisit it with new fervor.

Watching documentaries is one of the best ways to deepen your appreciation of cycling. In recognition of women’s history month, here are seven films worth putting on your favorites list.

“This week’s profile tackles three different cycling efforts: steady-state, surges (or accelerations) and pyramids. Each drill challenges your cardiovascular system in a different manner. Steady-state efforts call for consistent heart rate. Surges challenge your ability to gracefully recover from periods of increased intensity. While pyramids are a combination of the two — controlled breathing across varied durations.”

I really liked #6
6. Stopping makes it worse
The momentum of your cycling is what makes it easier to carry on. There is nothing worse than having to stop when cycling outdoors because of the effort it takes to get things back into motion. It requires energy to build up speed again and if we’re doing this too often, we’ll use up our fuel reserve quicker meaning exhaustion will creep up on us a lot faster.

Keeping in the zone through music prevents cycling failure, which in turn, allows you to build stamina or strength – a very important focus of your goals.

It’s hard to stay active during the lockdown, especially when we lose motivation and find it much easier to sit on the sofa. It becomes a huge challenge, particularly for avid cyclists, to transition to indoor cycling. We become used to the wind blowing through our hair, the sound of the tires on ...

It’s been seven months since my last bike trip. Heading out for 6 days starting tomorrow.
_
Taking the sleeper car and then jumping on the bike to ride is a different kind of challenge. Trying to eat right, get good sleep, and keep the anxiety low.
_
My conductor Tony gave me energy as we walked to the train and Egon Schiele and the German Expressionists (my kindle read) will hold me down til dinner.
_
If you’ve never done the sleeper car, you are missing out. No mask needed once you close the door. And lots of time to read and write.
_
Send positive energy pls!

Women cyclist Wednesday: much love to who recently shared a clip of her growth doing bunny hops.
_
When she first started, few women were jumping over the cyclocross barriers. She has played a part in changing that. More women riders now jump, though few as gracefully as Ellen Noble.
_
I’ve been challenging my riders to grow on the bike. Cuz truth is, after your first 6 months riding indoors, improvement takes focused effort.
_
You start training. Versus just exercising.
_
I don’t want to go back to pre-Covid. I wanna prepare to master post-covid life. Let’s grow y’all!

I had an indoor rider tell me they watched more of the tour this year than the last 30 years combined! That really made my day.
_
I wrote this piece (https://www.activelifedc.com/cycling/how-watching-the-tour-de-france-can-make-you-a-better-cyclist/117443) for a few years back. Just like you watched your fave athletes as a kid and emulated their moves, this is what grown ups get to do with cycling.
_
Link in bio. (Twitter folk, y’all gotta google it... or follow me on ig)
_
From the piece:
“The Tour de France is the world's largest annual sporting event. Spanning three weeks and covering over 2000 miles, it is a grueling physical challenge. Competing in le Tour is the annual goal of most professional cyclists.
_
Though few of us will ride a Tour de France stage, most casual cyclists live vicariously through the performances of their favorite riders. In watching the Tour, cyclists learn tidbits about the sport as well as tips on form and technique.

TBT: “To pass, or not to pass?” Of course, the proper thing is to pass. I learned that in college.

But what if it’s a horse?
