As women leaders, many of us have been conditioned to believe we need to choose between empathy and accountability. Either we are understanding leaders or effective leaders.
I do not believe that is true.
The conversations I am having lately keep coming back to this idea that leadership requires both grace and accountability. People need clarity. They also need support. Teams need expectations. They also need leaders who can stay calm, communicate honestly, and lead with integrity when things do not go according to plan.
What I have learned over the years is that accountability without humanity creates fear, and too much grace without direction creates confusion. Strong leadership lives somewhere in the middle.
That balance is where trust is built.
