I’ve been reading the tributes to Dolly Parton since learning of her passing, and something stands out. Of course people are remembering the music, the talent and an extraordinary career.

But even more, they seem to be remembering her humanity.

Her kindness. Her generosity. Her humor. Her ability to love and respect people who didn’t necessarily think, believe or live exactly as she did.

Dolly seemed to understand something we could use more of right now:
You can know exactly who you are without needing someone else to be like you.

You can hold your values without diminishing someone else’s. You can disagree and still leave room for respect. And you can accomplish extraordinary things while remaining deeply human.

Maybe that’s what a life well lived ultimately leaves behind. Not just what we accomplished, but how we made people feel. Whether we made room for others. Whether we left the world a little warmer and kinder because we were here.

Dolly reminded us that kindness doesn’t require sameness.

A question for your Tuesday…

What in your life feels harder than it used to—not because you’re doing it wrong, but because it may no longer fit who you’re becoming?

A job.
A relationship.
A routine.
An expectation you’ve carried for years.
Even an old definition of success.

We’re often quick to assume that when something feels difficult, we need to try harder.

But sometimes the discomfort is information.

Maybe the question isn’t “How do I make this work?”
Maybe it’s “Does this still work for me?”

What’s one thing in your life you might look at differently if you asked yourself that question today?

Widen the Lens

It’s surprisingly easy to move through life from our own seat.

What do I want? What works for me? What do I need right now?

There’s nothing wrong with those questions. In fact, they’re important.

But what if we occasionally added a few more?

How might this choice affect the people around me?
What might someone else need that I haven’t considered?
Is there a way forward that honors what I need while making room for them, too?

Think about how differently this could show up in everyday life.

Choosing how to spend a weekend with your partner. Making plans with friends. Navigating a disagreement with a sibling. Deciding who takes on what at home. Even how we respond when someone sees the world very differently than we do.

It doesn’t mean always putting someone else’s needs ahead of our own. Sometimes the healthiest choice is choosing ourselves.

It’s simply about remembering that our choices rarely exist in isolation.

When did everything become an identity?

You don’t just have a skincare routine anymore. Somehow it says something about your politics.

You don’t just eat meat. You make sure people know you eat meat.

What we drive. What we eat. What we believe. What we question. What we listen to. Somehow ordinary choices have become declarations of who we are.

And I keep wondering:

Why do we need everyone else to know?

There’s nothing wrong with having strong beliefs or finding communities where we belong. But maybe we’ve become so attached to our labels that we’ve forgotten how freeing it can be to simply… live.

Confidence can be much quieter.

Eat the steak. Use the face serum. Question things. Believe things. Change your mind when you learn something new. Care deeply about what matters to you.

But maybe not every choice needs to become a flag we plant in the ground.

Because the more tightly we define ourselves, the harder it can become to evolve—or to stay curious about people who choose differently.

Maybe real confidence is knowing who you are, living accordingly, and not needing to constantly prove it to everyone else.

What would change if we cared a little less about the labels—and became a little more curious about the people underneath them?

What are you holding onto simply because you haven’t decided what comes next?

A job. A relationship. A routine. A way of seeing yourself. Even an idea of what your life was supposed to look like.

We often think we need to know exactly where we’re going before we can let go of what no longer fits.

But maybe we don’t.
Maybe recognizing “this isn’t for me anymore” is enough for now.

Have you ever walked into a room where everyone knew your spouse’s name... but almost no one asked yours?

Being the spouse of an ambassador has brought incredible experiences into my life—new countries, fascinating people, moments of discovery and a front-row seat to work I’m deeply proud of.

But there’s another side.

When the spotlight naturally falls on the person beside you, sometimes you can quietly begin wondering:

Where did I go?

Not because you need the attention. But because being seen matters.

Recently, I had a conversation with another ambassador’s spouse who shared that she had experienced many of the same feelings.

That simple *”me too”* felt incredibly validating.

And it reminded me that this isn’t really about diplomatic life.

It’s about what can happen when we become so invested in someone else’s journey that we slowly lose sight of our own.

Parents. Partners. Caregivers. Anyone who has ever stood proudly beside someone they love while quietly wondering who they’re becoming themselves.

Maybe the question isn’t whether we should support the people we love.

Of course we should.

Maybe it’s simply:

While helping someone else become more of who they are, are you still becoming more of who you are?

STOP TELLING PEOPLE WHAT TO DO (unless they ask you to)

Spend five minutes on social media or with a group of family members or friends, and they will happily tell you:

You need to wake up at 5 a.m.
You need to leave that job.
You need to set better boundaries.
You need to do these 3 things to be healthier.
You need to stop doing this and start doing that.

But there’s a problem with all those need tos.

What worked for someone else may have absolutely nothing to do with what will work for you.

**Psychology gives us a few reasons why.**

We have a fundamental need for autonomy—to feel that we have some authorship over our own lives. When someone tells us what we should do, it can actually create resistance. Psychologists call this reactance: the instinct to push back when we feel our freedom to choose is being threatened.

But something different happens when we’re invited to think.

What do I actually want?
What’s getting in my way?
What options haven’t I considered?
What would feel like the right next step for me?

Now the answer isn’t being handed to us.
We’re discovering it.

And discovery creates something advice often doesn’t: ownership.

So perhaps influencers, coaches, leaders—and really, all of us—could experiment with replacing a little advice with a little more curiosity.

Instead of:
“Here’s what you need to do.”

Try:
“Here’s what worked for me. What might work for you?”

That small shift leaves room for something incredibly important:
The possibility that the person sitting across from us knows more about their own life than we do.

Big life transitions aren’t defined by perfect outcomes. They’re shaped by the small moments when we choose courage over certainty.

There are conversations I’ve replayed in my head dozens of times before ever having them.

Moments where I wanted to ask for help. Admit I didn’t have the answer. Tell someone how I really felt. Take a step toward something new.

What usually stopped me wasn’t a lack of courage.
It was the belief that if I couldn’t do it well, maybe I shouldn’t do it at all.

Over time, I’ve realized it was how I was measuring it that felt disempowering.

Success isn’t having the “perfect” conversation.
It isn’t saying every word exactly right.
It isn’t controlling how someone responds.

Sometimes success is simply that you showed up.
You made the call.
You asked the question.
You shared something real.

You tried.

The outcome will always be outside your control.
The effort never is.

The first quarter of 2026 felt... uncertain.

Like many of us, I’ve found myself questioning what’s next, where my work is evolving, and who I am in all of this.

Several weeks ago, while walking home from the grocery store, I kept thinking about how much I care about humanity and how I would love to be surrounded with more people who are exploring what it means to be human and how we create a better future together.

Also, in this moment my thoughts went to finding a book where the focus is on what’s our purpose here on Earth, and about how each of has a unique talent or gift to share. So, on a On a whim, I stopped at a neighborhood bookstore that was on my route home (se llama Cafebrería El Péndulo).

I wandered through the English-language section, but nothing really stood out. Then I looked up, and on the very top shelf was a single title:

Pure Human. The Hidden Truth of Our Divinity, Power and Destiny.

I smiled (and my heart did as well).

Maybe it was coincidence, yet this all felt like it was supposed to happen in this place and this time. Maybe when something matters deeply to us, we simply begin noticing what’s been there all along.

Or maybe life has a quiet way of nudging us—not with certainty, but with enough encouragement to keep following our curiosity.

Whatever it was, I walked home feeling a little lighter.

Not because I suddenly had all the answers, but because I was reminded that sometimes the next step isn’t about having a plan.

It’s about paying attention.
