Peyton Parker saved his best performances for the biggest stage.
The Wamego senior captured two state titles and added a runner-up finish to help power the Red Raider boys to a third-place team finish at the Class 4A State Track and Field Championships over the weekend in Wichita.
Parker opened his weekend Friday by winning the 3,200-meter run in 9:26.23 before returning Saturday to place second in the 1,600 in 4:18.55 and claim the 800-meter state title in 1:53.54.
“I gave it everything,” Parker said after his 3,200-meter win. “Crossing the finish line was the best feeling ever. It was a good early birthday present.”
His birthday on Saturday brought another memorable moment for Parker, who battled back from a stress fracture to finish his high school career with three all-state performances.
“I had a different mindset after my stress fracture earlier this season,” Parker said. “I’ve just been working on my kick, and it still helped a lot. It showed today.”
Parker also ran on Wamego’s third-place 4x800 relay team alongside Malachi Weimer, Emil Wolfe and Luke Ault, which finished in 8:03.37.
Up next for Parker is Nebraska-Kearney, where he plans to continue competing in both cross country and track.
“I’ve tried my best through all four years,” Parker said. “It really showed with my success through cross country and track. I’m proud to give a legacy to Wamego, especially with Coach (Rick) Patton retiring this year. I had to show out for him.”
Parker was far from the only contributor for the Red Raiders.
Senior Josh Flanigan Jr. captured a state championship in the discus with a throw of 171-7, while junior Mason Isch placed third in the shot put at 53-5.
Sophomore William Adams added a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles in 39.47, and Weimer earned another medal with a third-place finish in the 800 in 1:57.13. Senior Tasen Nickel rounded out the boys medalists with a fourth-place finish in the pole vault at 14-0.
On the girls side, Wamego finished 12th with 17 points. Junior Shayne Pittenger-Reed led the way with third-place finishes in both the 1,600 (5:10.66) and 800 (2:18.89). Senior Skylar Schoenbeck placed fifth in the javelin at 131-11, while sophomore Liz Bollhoefer tied for eighth in the high jump at 5-2.
The Wamego boys' track and field team had a strong showing at state, finishing 3rd as a team.
