After spending so long stuck in stress, burnout, and what I call being “lost in the sauce,” I’m learning that healing doesn’t always look like pushing harder.

Sometimes it looks like slowing down, which is exactly what I’m doing with all the guidance and support from South Jersey Physical Therapy and Functional Wellness. I have received some amazing modalities here! Today it was assessment and treatment, qi gong, and full body red light therapy via Photobiomodulation Therapy Bed. (I have lots more to share about this journey but thank goodness for this team. I have a whole am and pm routine now, etc. This is nervous system reset.)

Now, I’m prioritizing me. These qi gong-inspired movements and thoracic rotations will become part of my reset. As I come out of fight-or-flight, I’m realizing how much tension I was carrying in my upper back and rib cage.

For me, “less is more” means to do daily movement at minimum that’s just like this - strategic. It’s functional movement.

Functional exercises restore your ability to breathe deeply, rotate through your spine, move lymph, improve posture, and create space for your nervous system to feel safe again.

Less stiffness.
More mobility.

Less stress.
More flow.

Less forcing.
More listening.

I’m learning that healing isn’t found in doing more.

Sometimes, less really is more.

The cheat code is authenticity and joy.

Somewhere along the way, life got busy. Work, kids, responsibilities, expectations … and before I knew it, I was what I call “lost in the sauce.”

I got so far away from myself that I almost forgot who I was at my core.

This season of life is about unmasking.

It’s about taking the break.
Taking the walk.
Having the dance party.
Speaking up.
Resting when I need rest.
Moving when my body craves movement.
Keeping it weird and belly laughing out loud.

It’s about putting out the energy I want to receive and trusting the rest to fall into place.

I’ve spent too much time trying to fit into spaces that required me to shrink, perform, or pretend.

Joy isn’t a reward for getting everything done. Joy is the path back to yourself.

So if you’ve been feeling disconnected, overwhelmed, or stuck in survival mode, maybe your reset doesn’t need to be more discipline.

Maybe it starts with remembering who you were before the world told you who to be.

Authenticity.
Joy.
That’s the cheat code.

Movements like thread the needle, child’s pose, and pigeon paired with deep breathing shifts your body from “go-go-go” mode into rest, recovery, and healing.

When we move and breathe with intention, we improve our circulation, lymphatic flow, joint lubrication, and nervous system regulation. You are helping energy move more freely through your body - opening up any blockages or stagnant energy.

Stretching and lengthening reduces muscular tension around your rib cage, spine, hips, and abdomen, allowing tissues to glide more freely and helping you feel less “stuck.”

Twisting and side-body movements support areas around your liver and gallbladder. While stretching doesn’t directly “detox” these organs, movement, deep breathing, and relaxation improves circulation, reduces tension, and support overall digestive function.

Go for it!!

TY South Jersey Physical Therapy and Functional Wellness - I’m staying on track thanks to your guidance!!!

If you’ve been following my last few posts, you know I am in total reset mode. I burned myself out and was really bad emotionally and physically.

My body made me stop. Respiratory/upper airway issues (no prior history), physical limitations in my spine and hips. I couldn’t sleep. My mindset was dark, I was drowning.

I have had more doctor visits in the past week than I’ve had in the last few years!!!

Lately I’ve been leaning into more “free” movement and dancing — less counting reps, more listening to what my body needs. (And slow, deep breaths!)

Dancing, rope flow (or sock flow in this example), walking, crawling, twisting, playing … it all feeds my nervous system in ways traditional workouts miss.

I’m so inspired by and my algorithm!!!! 🕺💃 Look at me with my socks with socks inside, just rockin’ it!

Movement like this stimulates brain plasticity and learning, improves coordination and body awareness, while improving your balance and reaction time.

Dancing and free flow movement supports your lymphatic system and circulation, regulates blood sugar and stress hormones.

Through creativity and emotional expression, you can shift your body out of fight-or-flight and into a more regulated state.

When I take time to move like this, I feel stronger, calmer, and more like myself.

Mobility training focuses on helping your body move the way it was designed to move.

I was experimenting and flowing here, targeting thoracic spine mobility (mid-back rotation), and chest opening to and counteract hours of sitting, driving, and screen time.

This type of movement promotes circulation and lymphatic flow, targets any stiffness through your shoulders, neck, and upper back, and supports better posture.

Mobility allows your body to move blood, lymph, oxygen, nutrients, and waste products efficiently.

When we’re stressed, burned out, or stuck in one position all day, everything tends to feel compressed. Gentle mobility work helps create space again.

Slow twisting and lengthening movements calm the nervous system. When you pair movement with breath, you can shift out of a constant fight-or-flight state and into a more restorative mode that supports recovery.

Start flowing and moving, with or without a stick!!

For busy working moms, rest and recovery aren’t luxuries. They’re part of the job.

When you’re constantly caring for others, working, managing a household, and keeping up with all the things, your body and brain need time to recharge.

Rest and recovery regulates your nervous system, improves mental clarity, supports emotional regulation, and allows your muscles and tissues to recover.

A relaxed nervous system balances the hormones that support your cortisol regulation and other hormones involved in mood, appetite, and energy.

Chronic stress and lack of sleep weakens your immune system - that’s where I’m at now - with instructions “not to leave the house” from a dear colleague 🧑‍⚕️🩻🩺. Thank goodness for all the modalities and options, and knowledgable friends with all the support South Jersey Physical Therapy and Functional Wellness The Enlightened Elephant Wellness Loft🙏

Most importantly, regular recovery *prevents burnout* and helps sustain your energy and passion for the people and activities you love.

When you realize dance is nervous system regulation!!!

I need more of this on the daily.

Dancing is a way to reconnect with our bodies, process stress, and shift out of survival mode.

Lots of benefits.

Regulates your nervous system
- Moves your body from a fight-or-flight state toward a calmer, more regulated state, reduces stress and improves your emotional well-being.

Boosts mood
- Increases your endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin that support your mood, motivation, and resilience.

Supports brain health
- Challenges your memory, coordination, timing, and learning.
- Creates new neural pathways and helps maintain cognitive function as we age.
- Engages both sides of the brain through movement, rhythm, and pattern recognition.

Improves proprioception and body awareness
- Helps you better understand where your body is in space.
- lmproves your balance, coordination, agility, and reaction time.
- Builds confidence in movement and reduces your risk of falls and injuries.

Gets lymph moving
- Helps circulate lymph fluid, which supports your immune function.

Supports blood sugar regulation
- Muscles use glucose for energy. Exercise improves your insulin sensitivity and blood sugar control.

Builds resilience
- We don’t get enough creativity, self-expression, and play. Dancing releases tension stored in the body and helps you reconnect with yourself.
