Roger Maris Beats the Babe (1961)

The number 61 stood for nearly four decades alongside mythical baseball numbers like 714, 56, and 511.

Even though it's been surpassed six times since 1998, Roger Maris' 61 home runs in 1961 remain one of baseball's most revered accomplishments.

The race to break Babe Ruth's record of 60 home runs was an epic battle between Maris and Mickey Mantle that captivated baseball in the summer of '61.

Though they played for the same team, they had different experiences. Mantle was the beloved Yankee, seen as the heir to Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio. Maris, on his third team in five years, didn't receive the same support from the press and fans, who were firmly in Mantle's corner.

Adding to Maris' pressure was Commissioner Ford Frick's midseason announcement: since Ruth played in a 154-game schedule and Maris in 162, Maris had to break the record within 154 games to be considered the single-season home run champion.

Late in the season, Mantle's pursuit ended due to a hip infection, leaving Maris to chase Ruth alone. By the 154th game, Maris had 59 home runs, two shy of beating Ruth within Frick's timeline.

In the final game of the season, with 60 homers, Maris hit his 61st in the fourth inning off Red Sox pitcher Tracy Stallard, securing his place in baseball history.

Maris' record stood for 37 years until the steroid-fueled era of Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, and Barry Bonds. Ruth's record had lasted 34 years before Maris broke it.
