A cute Muskrat video from last week on Round Lake in Malta.
Never have I ever seen anything enjoy breakfast more or at such a rapid pace. 😆

Yesterday's glorious Sunrise Paddle. (Which turned into about 8 hours on the water. 😄)
On the water just before 5am and it was already light enough to see.
There is just nothing as dramatic as the first light of the day.
I checked out 4 of the Bald Eagle nests and 3 are doing GREAT, with Eaglets all thriving & ready to start leaving the nest.
Nest #2 has THREE Eaglets!
There were also many families of ducks & geese.
I always love seeing the little ones.
Quite a bit of color coming on from wildflowers, (Both natives and non-natives)
Just an all-around perfect day to duck out of the Human World for a bit. :-)

Finally got around to looking at all my pictures from yesterday morning. (Nursery has been busy.)
What a great morning it was!
I'd spent hours just sitting, watching & photographing birds.
The Greater Yellowlegs family was so funny to watch.
Especially the young ones as the scampered zig zag all over the shoreline.
Then there was the Bald Eagle family from Nest #1.
Both adults and the 2 eaglets were very active and made for some great shots.
Also quite a few more wildflowers blooming since last week.
Best 3 hours of the day!

*WARNING* Viewing may cause motion sickness. 😆
Windy morning made for lots of boat rocking.
Still...pretty good view of the two eaglets from Nest #1 getting fed carp for breakfast.
Album of stationary pics from this morning's Sunrise Paddle to follow.

I had so much fun watching these 3 eagle pairs this morning.
Main purpose was to see if the nests were even still there.
A Black bear destroyed 3 nests last year.
SO happy to see Eaglets in Nest #1
(They lost their home and their kids last year.)
Nest #2 pair seem to be doing well too...in their rebuilt nest, that was taken down by 1/3 its size last fall.
However,...Nest #3 was completely GONE.
That nest had been there for at least 10 years.
But the adults weren't wasting any time rebuilding.
Busy collecting sticks.
There were also many ducks, Sandpipers & Yellowlegs out & about foraging for breakfast...but no signs of little ones yet.

Today's Sunrise Paddle.
Perfect morning with just a bit of fog...no wind...gorgeous sunrise
and lots of Bald Eagles, Ducks, Deer & coyotes.
Spring wildflowers are starting to bloom on the banks,
and water was high enough to be able to access all the backwaters.
Was not an easy thing to turn around & head back to the nursery today. 😏

First Sunrise paddle of 2026.
Oh what a long winter its been!
Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful morning to be out on the water again.
SO many different ducks, geese, eagles, muskrats, kingfishers & deer.
Only went down as far as Eagle Nest #2...but so happy that both pairs have been left in peace (so far) to raise their eaglets.

Not "Bad" necessarily...but definitely different than what I'm used to.
Anyway...was a beautiful morning on the river...
(Despite the 3 trucks & a boat trailer in the parking lot.)
I was afraid it would be a very loud nerve-racking morning,
but they must have gone way down river from where I was paddling.
I could still hear their gunshot...but off in the distance.
Above freezing at launch (which is a first over the last month)
Beautiful still water, lending itself to stunning reflections!
Saw a few of my favorite Eagles...but couldn't get any great shots because they were very nervous & easily spooked.
(Probably from all the gunshot)
The sun did eventually come out and persuaded me to stay out another hour longer than planned.
But who could resist a 40 degree day at the end of November?

Mid November & still paddling!
It never seems like a good idea at 6am to leave a warm house and fireplace when you can see thick ice on the windshield.
But as soon as the boat slips into the water...I am always glad that I did!
There are always SO many ducks this time of year.
and today was no exception.
Water high enough to get into the icy backwaters,
(which is where most of them hang out)
so I was very happy, despite the numb fingers. 😄
The skim of ice also gave opportunity to play with the new camera in a new environment...So much fun!
I think I got some neat shots of the ice with the perfect sunrise lighting.
I can't wait to get back again!
