We're proud to support Grand County's next generation of Nordic Skiers.

This season thanks to proceeds from the Grand Nordic Race Series, the Nordic ski swap and your membership we were able to provide scholarships to several dedicated local young athletes, helping them attend Junior Nationals March 9-14 in Cable Wisconsin. Grand Nordic is honored to play a small role in their journey and we can't wait to see what they accomplish next.

Ross Williams from Winter Park Competition Center said it well, “The Winter Park Competition Center (WPCC) Nordic Team, [plus Snow Mountain Ranch, Devils Thumb Ranch, Grand County Nordic Race Series, and Grand Nordic Gliders] have concluded a remarkable season that showcased resilience and community spirit despite one of the most challenging snow years in recent memory. Our athletes learned that conditions don't determine outcomes—preparation and perseverance do."

Key Comp Center accomplishments included freshman Ben Kaune qualifying for Junior Nationals, multiple podium finishes in Colorado Cup Races upping the WPCC team ranking , and the successful hosting of a Junior National Qualifier with over 200 participants at Snow Mountain Ranch.

Jeff Paulson, Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Director, called it “The winter that never happened but, it turned out alright.”

It was another busy season with solid participation from the general public and special groups like International Ski for Light and UK-based Armed Forces Para Snowsports Team. Local school teams and clubs were able to train consistently, have fun and perform well throughout the season.

Citizen races, school races, collegiate races, Biathlon races, and the Grand Nordic Ranch2Ranch, which this year was within the Ranch (Sorry Granby Ranch!), happened successfully all season. PSIA certified instructors became the SMR professional norm and everyone who skied at SMR offered kudos and a huge thanks to the hard-working, professional and creative grooming team to produce a phenomenal product this season. They worked with so little until there wasn’t anything left at all.

Marie-Ange Anderson, of Devils Thumb, scheduled and rescheduled traditional races but successfully pulled them off, sometimes offering cash prizes. Most of the staff were spotted outside with snow shovels to connect the ribbons of snow for Tommelfest free lessons and keg tosses and the trail laps that were the hallmark of every race this year.

Greg Finnoff, Grand County Nordic Race Series coordinator, and his awesome race committee members like Cheryl Allen, Diana Lynn, Lisa Bornfriend, and his group of timers moved race dates around as well as start-finish areas. They got the promotional word out state-wide and beyond to draw well over 700 racers this season to Grand County.

The team was able to complete seven out of eight planned races. And, those racers stayed overnight and spent money at local shops and businesses, a fact not lost on the Grand County Tourist Board who is the primary sponsor of skigrandnordic.org.

Lisa promotes events as webmaster of that marketing website, Terri Rylander maintains the page, Instagram, the Grand Nordic Community Bulletin Board and business outreach communication. Al Rothenbach is webmaster for the club website, grandnordic.org, sends out information blasts to our email list, and manages club membership. Sue French-Smith creates our Signup Genius program to recruit race and event volunteers and recruits announcers for the KFFR morning Nordic grooming reports.

These and other Grand Nordic Board members were always there helping set up, register people and make events happen like the Nordic Swap or Ranch2Ranch fundraiser. Chris and Stephen Lee were always teaching free lessons, volunteering themselves and organizing volunteers.

Without Tony Heisler keeping our finances straight, it would be tough to channel our funds and grants into our youth programs and scholarships programs that allow local kids to pursue Nordic skiing. Grand Nordic’s primary focus is assisting youth through scholarships and inexpensive skiing opportunities.

”Jamo” Jamison, who represents school teams on our Board, combines with scholarship chairman Kathy Jamison to assist awarding scholarships for youth programs and purchasing equipment.

New Board member Chris Michalowski identified the need for a program for talented but bored older elementary school kids and, with the help of volunteer coaches Ed Kimm, Katie Genadek, Erin Austin, Jim Howe and Maggie Michalowski, created and got funded the Grand Nordic Gliders program and a need for better seasonal rental equipment.

So another new program evolved – affordable seasonal rentals of high-quality gear for both Gliders and Middle Park High School and WP Competition Center new team members. Then the Michalowskis and crew pulled off a fun day of Red Barn Relays complete with 2-person teams of every combination possible plus costumes and all with a cheese sponsor theme - even grilled cheese sandwiches! A real feat to have that much fun in the middle of the worst snow year in my memory!

The partnership of all these organizations is led by Grand Nordic, WP Comp Center, Colorado Nordic Masters, and our fabulous Nordic Centers – Snow Mtn Ranch and Devils Thumb Ranch. Together they are All Things Nordic in Grand County.

"Nordic skiing runs deep in Grand County's DNA," noted Williams. "What started as a grassroots program (now ranging from pre-school to High School and National competition) has evolved into a vital part of our youth athletics landscape—one that values outdoor adventure and personal growth as much as competitive success."

Back country skiing is still flourishing if you can get out in the earlier part of the day. But, get advice on snow stability and don’t become a statistic!

With very little accessible snow except in higher terrain, the Nordic Center trails are closed with shops open for end of season sales only.

Devil’s Thumb will close out the ski season in style on April 4 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm! Celebrate with a high-energy day packed with games, beer tastings, delicious food, and live music. It’s a great chance to kick back, raise a glass, and toast to another great season with friends and community. Don’t miss their spring break apparel sale—get 50% off full-priced apparel (some exclusions apply)!

Snow Mountain Ranch is going to finish the season on Sunday the 5th of April, including a last day sale from 9am-5pm with up to 50% off select soft goods and equipment and a celebration with food and beverages from 12pm-4pm.

42nd Annual Snow Mountain Stampede this weekend

It’s that time of year to test yourself! Have you trained hard enough this season to be able to handle back-to-back 50K marathons or 25K half-marathons earning that coveted RANCH BOSS or RANCH HAND buckle from Snow Mountain Ranch? It’s the only place in the nation to ski Skate on Saturday and Classic on Sunday but are you tough enough?

Waiting out the weather this “winter” has taken its toll on all of us, mostly staff at the Nordic Centers and the Grand County Nordic Race Series. Schedule, cancel or move, reschedule and pray for snow and colder weather. The best is yet to come this weekend with the 42nd Annual Snow Mountain Stampede skate marathon on Saturday, March 7th and the Classic marathon on Sunday, March 8th at the Campers Hub, Snow Mountain Ranch.

There are also distances of 12.5K and 3K each day for those not quite ready for the longer distances. The course, hopefully, will consist of a 12.5k loop out from the CCOs and Ute, around Cranmer, out toward the Waterfall trail and back, around Gaskill almost to the Biathlon Range, back Gaskill to Lower Blue Ridge and in Tabernash. Remember the weather can change everything between this writing and Friday!

Please note the 50K (four loops) starts at 9am, 25K (two loops) 10am, 12.5K (one loop) 10:30am, and 3K at 10:35am. There is a family 1K each day immediately following. Two aid stations are planned. The post-race lunch included for both racers and all volunteers is always fabulous!

With the prospect of new snow this week and a great loop layout, Shawn and David will again work their magic for the best grooming possible. Remember, youth up to age 18 can race for only $10 in any length race. So, it is the perfect opportunity for young racers to get racing experience. Visit skigrandnordic.org to either register or volunteer or call Grand Nordic at 970-887-0547.

As usual, we need more volunteers! At least bring your bell and cheer on the racers for the racing highlight of the season. Meanwhile pray for snow and colder temperatures!

Also, score big at the end of season Nordic equipment sales happening now in March. Consider donating your old equipment to Grand Nordic at the collection boxes in the Fraser and Granby libraries. Grab your good pair of skis and head for early morning crust skiing in the meadows just into Rocky Mountain National Park! That might be it for this season!

Alpenglow BOUNCE 5K Winter Dash Saturday

GRAND NORDIC CORNER
February 12, 2026 Sky-Hi News
By Diana Lynn Rau, Grand Nordic president

Saturday was a perfect day for the Trek. The sky was clear, the air was still and, it was warming up nicely from a fairly cold night. The Ranch2Ranch fundraising Trek last Saturday covered the best snow available at Snow Mountain Ranch for a fun Trek and the tracks were good.

Only about 40 people thought Grand Nordic could pull it off but, it was a great course with some challenging uphills, a beautiful viewpoint, some long downhills and, beautiful spots in the woods.

Friendly East Grand Middle School and Middle Park High School team members at aid stations and claiming your bib when you were finished. These were the kids who most appreciated the scholarships funded primarily by the Ranch2Ranch.
Some people skied 3 or even 4 loops of the 6k course! Granby Ranch highlighted their continued support giving away GR cowboy hats and more. Fischer and Swix gave away a beautiful sport bag, Bottle holder-pack, drink belts, hats, and more. What a fabulous day and a fantastic performance from groomers Shawn and David, and Jeff Paulson and the Nordic Center staff.

Sunday the Devils Thumb 30k/15k Stagecoach Classic showcased herculean efforts by the entire staff and volunteers to shovel snow into thin spots and make a useable course worthy of their high standard of food and beverages.

Almost 40 racers attacked the 2-lap Long Course with David Norris triumphant in 1:11:08 followed by Ryan Sederquist and Egor Gavrilova. Top women were Jessica Yeaton in 1:28:35 followed by Ella Dewolf and Katie Lindquist. Men’s and Women’s leaders each received $1500, $1000, and $800 cash respectively.

Over 30 racers competed in the Short Course with local Justin Fosha leading all the way, finishing in 41:56 chased by his son Chase Fosha and Jason Macaluso. Top women were Anna Gavrilova coming in at 53:34 followed by Emily Lovett and Emily Volkert. Local Tim Scholwalter, the lone 80+ entrant, was 24th overall. Men’s and Women’s leaders each received $1000, $800, and $500 cash respectively. But at age 15, Chase Fosha has returned his prize because he is still competing in High School.

Now is the time to do your best snow dances and help the weather pattern change this week into a predicted colder pattern with more snow so we can finish out the Nordic season. The Grand Nordic 30k/15k Sweetheart Skate race at Snow Mountain Ranch is on February 14th, VALENTINE’S DAY! It may use some higher elevation trails since that snow remains excellent. Register or volunteer at www.skigrandnordic.org.

Unfortunately, the Norwegian Barnelopet, a local kids’ favorite, has been cancelled for February 21st due to lack of snow around the Legget Building at Snow Mountain Ranch. But, the State High School Championships have been moved from Vail to Snow Mountain for that weekend.

Granby Ranch may have to go to the East Mountain Nordic trails to find 15k of usable trails for their February 28 skate race. We can only guess whether the 42nd Annual Snow Mountain Stampede 50k Classic and 50k Skate races will happen on March 7th and 8th. But, if anyone can do it, it will be the Snow Mountain Ranch wizards! We may not even have crust skiing this year. So, get on your dancing shoes!
