Smokie is a molly (female) 🫶 and the queen of all of our hearts! She is so special, with the sweetest soul….and has been a beloved part of the family for many years.

Smokie has not only been a riding and pack mule in both the Sierra Nevadas and the Blue Ridge Mountains but has also competed in barrel racing and gymkhana events at mule shows and youth rodeos. Her favorite treat is graham crackers by the campfire!

When you join our Adopt a Mule program, you become part of the mission behind mules like Smokie. Link in the comments below👇

🫏❤️It is true that a mule has NEARLY 360 degree vision...actually somewhere between 350-355 degrees! ❤️🫏
A mule can:
* See nearly all the way around its body without turning its head.
* Watch the ground while grazing and still monitor for danger.
* Detect movement very well from the sides.

However, they do have two main blind spots:

1. Directly in front of their nose (about 3–4 feet out).
2. Directly behind them behind the tail.
That’s one reason experienced mule handlers avoid walking straight up behind a mule without letting it know they’re there. If a mule wants a better look at something, you’ll often see it raise or lower its head to bring the object into its binocular vision for better depth perception.

Inherited from their donkey parentage, mules have eyes positioned further apart than horses. This unique head shape and eye placement give them a wider field of vision, allowing them to look ahead while keeping all four hooves in their line of sight. This ability is a major reason why mules are renowned for being incredibly "sure-footed" on rough terrain, as they can visually analyze exactly where they are stepping.

Long before roads, trucks, and helicopters, mules were the backbone of industry across the Americas.

This remarkable 1885 photograph by Brazilian photographer Marc Ferrez shows pack mules working in the mining region of Minas Gerais, Brazil. These animals were essential to moving ore, supplies, and precious metals through rugged terrain where wheeled transportation was impossible.

From the 17th and 18th centuries onward, Jesuit missions developed extensive mule-breeding programs throughout Latin America to meet the demands of colonial economies:

* Mexico: Mules were bred specifically for sugar plantations in Morelos and silver mines in Zacatecas and Durango.
* Brazil: In the gold-rich state of Minas Gerais, mule trains known as tropas carried gold over vast distances to Rio de Janeiro.
* Argentina: Jesuits raised hardy mules in the grasslands of Río de la Plata and shipped them to the silver mines of Bolivia and Peru.

These breeding programs produced different types of mules suited to the work they were expected to perform. Mine mules were built for steep, rocky trails and heavy loads, while plantation mules were developed for endurance and agricultural labor.

This history highlights a truth that remains relevant today: when terrain is difficult and access is limited, mules are often the most reliable means of transportation.

At Mission Mules, we continue that legacy. Just as mules once carried gold and supplies through mountains and wilderness, they now deliver food, medicine, and hope to people isolated by hurricanes, floods, and other disasters.

For centuries, mules have helped build nations. Today, they are still carrying what matters most. 🐴❤️

Jeb is a gorgeous bay mule and one of our main saddle mules for the pack string. Jeb was a gift from a retired Marine who had went through a flood in New Bern, North Carolina, a few years ago. Because he wanted him to have a good home where he could be used while he was rebuilding, and since we were training Marines and other special forces, he felt it would be a great fit.

He has turned out to be one of our best mules. It’s a little ironic that we received him because of a flood, and he was crucial to our relief efforts in the flooding due to Hurricane Helene! Jeb’s favorite treats are Equine Quality Treats!

Through our Adopt a Mule program, supporters help provide care, feed, training, and ongoing ministry opportunities for mules like Jeb. Every adoption helps us continue the mission and keep these incredible animals ready to serve when needed most.
