As if all the dredge pipe in and around Fields Cut isn't enough to worry about, the colliding currents at the intersection with the Savannah River often conspire to collect big-ass deadheads purty near to the range tower. Because I was pointing out the dredge pipe running up over the berm next to the landing to some passengers (the pipe that runs all the way to Rams Horn Creek and goes under your boat ((you hope)) at the north end of Field's Cut and again at Wall's Cut) I didn't see this monster until I was about 20 feet from hitting it. Turned the wheel and prayed that it was up and down and not across.
Lesson learned?

Update: As of Saturday afternoon crews had relocated the section of pipe that was floating at and immediately under the surface of the junction of Fields Cut and the Wright River, near the red 48A buoy. When we passed back through there returning from Daufuskie to Savannah, one of the workers on a workboat used arm signals to indicate that we should pass further into the middle of the cut, on the wrong side of the buoy. We did that, slowly, and found about 7 feet of water. This pipe situation is HAZARDOUS, recommend you transit here and at the other location where the pipe runs beneath your vessel, at Walls Cut, at idle speed. We've been told of two boats that have struck the pipe with catastrophic damage to motor lower units. If we didn't need to go to Daufuskie to get passengers we wouldn't be going.

Dredging update!

Folks, this is a major operation. The contractor has laid or is laying pipe between the landing where Fields Cut joins the Savannah River and durn near to Daufuskie Island (ICW and Mungeon Creek). This is a tremendous length. There is a barge with a giant pump near the northeast end of the pipe run. Probably to boost the spoil all the way back to the Savannah River/Fields cut landing . It appears as if the pipe goes underwater from the west bank to the east bank of the north end of Fields Cut, where the cut meets the Wright River.

Our thoughts... As long as submerged pipe stays submerged in water that is deep enough, it shouldn't cause a problem. But if somehow a section of pipe separates the loose ends could present a hazard. Our advice is to really slow down and sort things out before proceeding.

Attention Savannah Boaters:
Dredger barge, several workboats, equipment barge, and lots and lots of pipe in Fields Cut. Use caution passing through here. Barge crew requests vessels to pass at no wake speed.

While we prepare to take a couple to Harbour Town for the Heritage, our friends at Tybee Oyster Company head out to the ranch to service the cages and sort out the Salt Bombs. #1 grandson is on that boat and on the job. Proud Grandpa over here...
