Happy Memorial Day Weekend from Keystone Trails Association!

As you hit the trails this weekend, please remember: if you see young wildlife, leave it be.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission reminds us: "Mid-to-late spring and early summer are popular times for humans to encounter newborn and young wildlife. The best thing people can do when encountering any wildlife is to simply let them be." PGC Bureau of Wildlife Management Director Matthew Schnupp

That fawn in the leaves is not abandoned. Mom is nearby. Young animals stay still while their mothers watch from a safe distance.

It is also the law. Removing wildlife from the wild can result in fines up to $1,500 per animal. If you find an animal truly in need, find a licensed rehabilitator at www.pawr.com

Thanks to members of Cumberland Valley High School's FFA group who came out to help with some maintenance on the Appalachian Trail! Despite the rainy conditions, they filled two buckets with litter along the trail near Scott Farm, and trimmed back some vegetation. Way to go! 🤩 We even saw a box turtle under the bridge.

Keystone Trails Association is honored to receive the Group Improvement Award from the Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation's 2026 Awards Dinner!

This award recognizes our Bald Eagle State Forest Bridge Flash Crew, a small but mighty team of volunteers who made a huge impact on the Mid State Trail and Devils Elbow Trail this past year.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to the volunteers who made it all happen:
Tom Bastian
Woody Loudenslager
Tom Krebs
Donna Thompson
Jenn Ulmer

Under Jenn's leadership, this crew removed, rebuilt, and replaced 5 wooden hiking bridges, logging 158 volunteer hours and driving more than 1,800 miles combined to get the job done. Working in challenging conditions and hauling materials into remote sites, they helped keep vital trail infrastructure in Bald Eagle State Forest safe and accessible for every hiker who crosses those bridges.

Thank you to the Pennsylvania Parks and Forest Foundation and sponsor Stahl Shaeffer Engineering for this recognition.

The PA Department of Environmental Protection has denied the water encroachment permit for PA General Energy Co.'s proposed 3.9-mile permanent access road and staging area in Loyalsock State Forest!!

Keystone Trails Association submitted a letter and testified against this project. Loyalsock State Forest belongs to all of us, hikers, families, wildlife, and the communities who depend on clean water and wild places.

Loyalsock stays wild. Keep hiking. Keep fighting for the places you love. Read more on PA Environment Digest
