As Memorial Day weekend arrives, it marks the unofficial start of summer here in Douglas County and across the region. Families and friends will be heading to pools, lakes, rivers, and other aquatic areas to enjoy the holiday weekend and warmer weather. While this time of year brings excitement and recreation, it also serves as an important reminder about water safety and the shared responsibility we all have in helping keep one another safe.
Aquatic emergencies can happen quickly and often silently. Taking simple precautions such as staying attentive, using properly fitted life jackets when appropriate, and remaining aware of surroundings can help ensure a safer and more enjoyable summer for everyone in our community. For younger or inexperienced swimmers, practicing “arm’s-length supervision” can make all the difference during a critical moment.
As we honor Memorial Day and spend time with family and friends, let’s also commit to making water safety a priority throughout the summer season.
