Basic karate kicks 💯
The moment your hips turn and your balance locks in, the side kick becomes one of the most powerful weapons in karate. The Yoko Geri Keage is a fast, snapping motion—your knee lifts sharply, then the lower leg flicks out and retracts just as quickly. It’s designed for speed, surprise, and precision, striking targets like the ribs or chin before the opponent can react. In contrast, the Yoko Geri Kekomi is all about pe*******on and power. Instead of snapping, the leg drives straight through the target with the heel, using the full force of the hips and body weight. Where Keage is quick and sharp like a whip, Kekomi is heavy and decisive like a battering ram—one disrupts, the other dominates.

The Shotokan logo, known as the Shotokan Tiger, represents the balance between power and control in karate. Designed around the teachings of Gichin Funakoshi, the tiger is enclosed in a circle, symbolizing disciplined energy contained by self-mastery. The tiger itself reflects strength, alertness, and fighting spirit, while the circular border reminds practitioners that true karate is not wild aggression but controlled force guided by character. In essence, the Shotokan emblem teaches that the ultimate goal of training is not just to become strong, but to develop strength that is governed by calmness, respect, and wisdom.

Temporary tatami floor is going in!

Our new dojo has made big progress in recent weeks thanks to a few great donors and supporters, and we are so grateful to our resilient club and our passionate and tireless (aka relentless) Sensei Umbel who has been putting in long, long hours.

Monday, we are back on the mat for a soft opening for established members only.

As always, doors open at 5:45 and class starts at 6:15pm
