Some of the most important work on a football team never shows up under the lights on Friday night.

Hunter Alford gave Moore County plenty of that last week.

Against Cascade, Alford helped the Raiders prepare by giving the scout team its version of running back Nathan Zimmerman. A basketball and baseball player, Alford works at free safety on the scout defense and has also been developing as an extra-point snapper. The coaches are excited about what could happen when football fully clicks for him.

Grayson Weatherspoon found his way into the spotlight a little differently.

On kickoff return, Weatherspoon blew up one of Cascade’s starting defensive backs with a big block. He has put in his time on special teams, and the scout team, and the coaching staff expects that willingness to be physical to earn him more snaps.

Moore County heads north Friday for a 7 p.m. kickoff against Goodpasture Christian.

The Cougars’ offense starts with No. 14 Slom Leavell, a Tennessee commitment at wide receiver. No. 11 Heath Vinett gives Goodpasture another threat outside, while three-year starting quarterback No. 12 Chase Angell has a firm grip on the RPO game. He gets the ball out quickly and makes a defense choose in a hurry.

Then there is No. 3 Boobie Cantrell. He runs hard between the tackles and catches the football well out of the backfield, giving Goodpasture another way to hurt a defense.

The kicking game deserves attention, too. Goodpasture primarily uses sky kicks and comes hard after punts, putting a premium on clean ex*****on from Moore County’s special teams.

Defensively, the Cougars line up in a 3-4, use plenty of slants and will occasionally two-gap. They have mostly kept both safeties deep this season, making patience underneath part of the equation.

The heat has made preparation a balancing act as well. With triple-digit heat index readings possible across Middle Tennessee, Moore County has had to work within TSSAA heat restrictions, with practice limits tightening at 95 degrees and again at 100 degrees. Above 104, outdoor practice stops altogether.

Friday’s game falls under different competition rules, with added medical and cooling precautions required if conditions reach the highest heat range.

So the Raiders have spent the week preparing for more than Leavell, Angell, Cantrell and Goodpasture’s 3-4. They have been trying to get the work in, keep their legs under them and still have something left when the lights come on Friday night.
