Tryon Country Club

Tryon Country Club Established in 1916, Tryon Country Club is one of the oldest private golf clubs in North Carolina.

The club is essentially a nine hole golfing club where members walk or ride, play nine or 18, and hardly ever wait at the tee any day of the week.

Hi folks,

With golf season well and truly under way, this is a quick note to say we are extending the deadline for the season-long Match Play Tournament.

Simply sign up with David in the pro shop and play a seeding round any time up until the end of May. All of the details are below. (Entry fee is $20)

This is a great tournament, so don't miss the opportunity to get involved!

All the best,

Simon

Season Long Match Play Tournament – how it works.

Sign up with David in the pro shop. (That will give us a list of entrants)
Play a “seeding” round any time between now and May 31st. Simply let David know you are playing your seeding round for the Match Play tournament, and he will give you an official scorecard.
Once seeding rounds have been played, we will create a bracket and post it on the board outside TCC. (For example if we have 32 players, they will be seeded 1-32, where 1 plays 32, 2 plays 31 and so on).
Once the bracket has been established, players are responsible for scheduling their own matches – we will play one round per month. For example, the first round matches will be played in June, second round in July, third in August etc.
Players are responsible for scheduling their own matches within the allotted month. David will provide official scorecards for matches – simply let him know you are playing a match.
This is a net event.
This is a knockout tournament.
We will have a special event for the grand finale, where spectators will be invited to watch and support the last golfers standing.

Match Play Format Explained

A round in match play golf will see two golfers competing head to head against each other and not against the rest of the field. Rather than trying to post the lowest score for the round golfers are here trying to win (or not lose) more holes than their opponent.

Each golfer hits his own ball throughout the round and after each hole, scores of both golfers for the hole are compared. The golfer with the lowest score is said to have won that hole. If both scores are identical then no points (or holes won) are awarded for that hole.

A winner is declared during the round when his lead is such that his opponent can no longer close the gap mathematically. Or in other words, a winner is declared when his opponent can no longer tie or win the match even if he were to win all of the remaining holes.

At the start of the round, golfers declare their own handicaps and the difference between those is calculated (David does all this for us! 😊). The golfer with the highest handicap will be awarded an extra stroke on as many holes as that calculated difference number.

For example, player A declares a handicap of 5 and player B declares a 10, for a difference of 5 (10 – 5 = 5). Player B will thus be given a free stroke on holes with difficulty ratings of 1 through 5. If player B were to need 5 strokes for the most difficult hole and player A to need 4 strokes on that same hole, the hole would be halved instead of seeing player B losing that hole thanks to his free stroke.

I wanted to take a moment to share an experience my son Harrison and I had recently at the range that really reinforced why we chose to join Tryon Country Club.

Harrison is 14 and, up until now, has never shown much interest in golf. Out of the blue, he asked if we could go hit balls together. As his dad, that meant a lot. Harrison is also on the autism spectrum, and because of that, I’ve always believed golf could be a uniquely good fit for him—the structure, the pace, the quiet environment, and the opportunity to focus and grow at his own speed.

While we were at the range, I was doing my best to explain the basics of a golf swing—probably well outside my qualifications. A member, Jack K., noticed what we were doing and walked over to offer some help. He was patient, encouraging, and incredibly kind. During our conversation, he generously offered Harrison an old set of clubs as a starter set. Believe be, it’s not just that old junk bag of clubs that belong up in the golf shop.

It was such a simple, genuine act—but it meant a great deal to both of us.

That kind of moment doesn’t happen everywhere. It’s a reflection of the culture at Tryon Country Club—the kind of place where people look out for one another, where different generations connect, and where a young boy just starting out can feel welcomed and supported.

I just wanted to share that with you and say thank you for fostering an environment where something like that can happen.
