Evaluation of inhaling five essential oils—Jasmine sambac, lemon verbena, balsam fir, Magnolia denudate (lily tree), Rosa rugosa (beach rose)—in a serotonin depleted insomnia model found that the oils reduced the time taken to fall asleep and improved total sleep time. Each of the oils increased the expression of 5HT1A and GABAARα1 proteins, associated with relaxation and sleep regulation, with lemon verbena and balsam fir (an odd chemotype with 60.3% linalool) being the most effective. The EOs also reduced pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α), suggesting they may help with stress-induced sleep disturbances.

Happy Sunday, everyone! It is officially getting into the winter season (we just got our first snow here in Wisconsin) and that means colder running weather. One thing to remember as you go out on your runs is not to over dress for them. You may want to dress a little warmer, but remember that, as you run, you will start to produce a lot of your own heat. Instead of putting on your heavy winter coats, maybe opt for a sweater or a longer sleeved shirt. This will decrease your risk of heat stroke (in winter, I know!) And make for a better running experience as it will add less bulk for you to try and move in.

Happy hump day! This fall weather is perfect for running and I hope you are all out taking advantage. Remember, just because summer is over does not mean that there aren't more opportunities to train to reach your goals! There are a lot of fun running events coming up and there is plenty of cool days ahead, so get out there and keep training!

Good evening, everyone! Fall is finally here which means cooler weather! This is my personal favorite time for running and I hope you are all out taking advantage! There are still lots of runs this year and if you are planning to do any of them there is no better time to get out there and train than now! Happy running!

Hey everyone! Just letting you all know how the race went. I (Jesse) finished at 1 hour 50 minutes and Joan finished at 2 hours 11 minutes. Being my first official race, I'll say it was definitely a learning experience but I had a lot of fun and definitely want to do it again next year!
