If you study [martial art] but you don’t take my Threat Discernment Training™️ and Use of Force Matrix™️ you’re running a serious risk. The average martial artist (the preceding 10,000 generations) who hasn’t had this NECESSARY training commonly runs the unacceptable gamble of, say, chopping grandma in the throat when she places her hand on your shoulder from behind, or of being a slave to muscle memory and stomping out an opponent you’ve already neutralized. Some martial sports are more adaptable than others, but the institutionalization of a martial art as sport is invariably its utter degradation, both in efficacy and culture. Sport elements can always be a useful addition, but their institutionalization turns any Art to trash.

They become overspecialized, adding technique that fails to function outside the scope of the sport, and by paring away many -if not most- of its most violently functional attributes, which become fouls, at best.

This lack of martial purpose additionally and invariably leads to the loss of martial ethic, and its replacement by sport ethic.

I’ve seen all this happen -in real time- to more than one martial art; one near to my heart. I’ve seen BJJ, e.g., go from its first marketing strategy in the UFC to the point where most stylists, without cross training, are utterly harmless due to its specialization as a sport.

The lethal precision of a 250 (+/-) year old sword.

I’m no museum curator or antique dealer, but I’ve fortunately been able to vigorously handle my share of antique weapons that I train to use over the years. One can certainly get through their traditional martial arts training without that opportunity, but it is always enlightening and there’s nothing quite like that connection to the past.

This smallsword is the most modern sword style I own, and of all the martial art weapons I’ve ever handled, it is inherently the most lethally precise.

I should note that I don’t train people with the smallsword -too modern for my preference- as I haven’t been trained with it. It has a living lineage, and to teach any art with a living lineage one hasn’t been trained under is fraud, as far as I’m concerned.

Yeah, it’s like that.

Some of my recent (stereotypical) interactions prompted this meme. This happens when you have divergent cultures operating simultaneously under an overarching culture (traditional vs postmodern, in this case). The postmodern disdains their own traditions while revering that of the foreign. It has been no less notable in the martial arts for at least 70 years.

The 20th century in particular holds a unique place in martial arts history, between mass media, the fall of honor culture, and the ability to avoid physical consequence, as an era in which more fake, strange, and out-of-the-food-chain martial arts were developed and promulgated than any previous era combined. And to add to this, more rootless reactionary systems were developed to combat it (not all of them bad; I’ve spent most of my life in one such). Here is a principle: no real martial art is now unique in its content, only in its compilation and structure.

Me:
“Medieval/Renaissance” (HEMA) martial arts are very comprehensive and a legitimate traditional martial study for combat/self defense, and I train and teach it as such; even the contextually irrelevant aspects of traditional martial arts should be tacitly trained as such, for skill development, and really just the seriousness it deserves. Sportify it, LARP it, but please, don’t conflate it.
