I am Darcee Burnett, the race director of the Hero Up Half Marathon and this is our story and the reason I wanted to start this event. One of our twin sons, Keith, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in February 2011, at the age of 3. After enduring the unimaginable for 19 months, he ultimately succumbed to the disease in September 2012. In the face of endless challenges, Keith endured with
patience and grace. He remained selfless and sweet. He is our hero. As a family we wanted to find a way to follow Keith's heroic ways and try to make a difference in the lives of future children and families affected by childhood cancer. We thought we would combine Keith's love for superheroes with my love of running, in hopes of providing a fun way to raise awareness and money for childhood cancer. Since September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month and also the month we lost our son, it has special significance for us. 100% of net race proceeds will go towards childhood cancer research. In honor of the many children suffering from cancer and in memory of the many children who have died, we all have an opportunity to make a difference. So, lace up your running shoes, don your cape and mask and "HERO-UP" for kids with cancer.
