"PUT MORE EMPHASIS ON DEFENSE." - David Birkby, National Director
One thing I find lacking in youth baseball development is the emphasis and time spent on the defensive side of things.
The following things are not focused on as much as others or deemed the “Cool” aspect of the game.
1. Glovework
2. Footwork
3. Defensive Situations
4. Playing GOOD Catch
There are many more things to list but my point is that defense is an afterthought to most players whereas pitching and hitting are always on the forefront of a players minds. A lot of factors are to consider here such as most of the country spends the winter months inside where defense can be hard to work on. Or the fact that we play way more games than we practice on an outdoor field. But there are many opportunities such as pregame defensive work that allows us to focus on some of the fundamentals.
But I can tell you one thing, the higher levels of baseball put a heavy emphasis on taking care of the baseball and playing good defense.
Below are fielding percentages for 3 D1, D2, & D3 programs in college baseball as of today.
D1:
Tennessee: 96.7%
Missouri: 95.7%
Illinois: 96.7%
D2:
Missouri S&T: 97.3%
Maryville: 95.8%
Drury: 96.8%
D3:
Webster: 96.2%
Washington University: 96.9%
Johns Hopkins: 97.2%
Average Fielding %: 96.6%
That means that whenever a baseball gets put in play 96.6% of the time it results in a clean fielding play without an error.
I have often said that if I were to coach a youth team all the way through high school, we would put almost half of our time towards defense, consistent good catch play, and game fielding situations.
Take pride in your defense and being reliable in the field. It's always nice to have your defensive abilities to fall back on when you are struggling on the mound or at the plate.
Good luck this weekend if you are getting some games in!
