VILLAGE BISON WIN CHAMPIONSHIP!

The Village Bison men’s senior baseball team wrapped up an amazing spring season with a championship!
The Bison finished in a 3 way tie for the 60 and over Tampa Senior Baseball League regular season championship but due to winning percentage entered the playoffs as the 3 seed. After last weeks thrilling 12-7 win over the 2nd seeded Tampa Thunder with a 5 run 9th inning the Village Bison took on the top seeded Latin Americans on Sunday in the championship game of the playoffs.
This game was a pitchers dual for the first five innings as two good lefties would go head to head. Barry Foster for the Bison and Jesus Cruz for the LA squad. LA would strike first as they scored a run in the bottom of the first. Cruz would hold the Bison scoreless for the first five innings and LA took a 1-0 lead into the top of the 6th. In the top of the 6th the Village Bison bats woke up! A double by Fred Millar to start the inning, Carlos Padilla was hit by a pitch, then back to back singles by Gary Rima and Vinny Zarrella followed by Barry Foster reaching on a fielders choice, Jay Loving hit a hard ball through the second baseman and then Joe Kasper singled to round out the inning where the Bison would score the maximum of five runs in the inning to take a 5-1 lead. Then in the top of the 7th the Bison would do it again! Randy Pawlowski singled, Gary Lynn reached on an error, Fred Millar got on base on a fielders choice, Steve Lloyd singled followed by four more hits in a row by the top four guys in the batting order! Padilla, Rima, Zarrella and Foster would all get base hits and when the dust cleared the Village Bison took control of the championship game with five more runs building a 10-1 lead! The Bison added an insurance run in the 8th and then with two outs in the top of the 9th would score 3 more! In the 9th Padilla got it started with his second hit of the game, Randy Reiter walked, followed by Jay Loving’s second hit of the game and then Kasper picked up 2 of his 4 RBI’s on the day with a single. The Bison took a 14-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th where the Latin Americans would score 2 runs but it was too little too late and the Village Bison would win the TSBL 60 and over championship convincingly 14-3!

Barry Foster, The Village Bison winning pitcher, was spectacular on the hill going all nine innings twirling a 5 hitter and striking out 8.
Hitting wise Kasper led the way with 3 hits including a double and he collected 4 RBI’s.
Rima and Zarrella had 3 hits a piece. Millar had a 2 hit day including a double.
Loving had 2 hits and scored 3 runs in the Bison victory. Padilla also would rip 2 hits in the lopsided win. Lloyd, Pawlowski, Foster and Dwight Huffman would round out the Bison 19 hit attack with one hit each!
The Bison defensive played well in the championship game too! The Bison would turn two big double plays in the 5th and 6th innings to stop potential LA rallies. Lenny Campbell was also outstanding not only catching all nine innings but calling a great game and how he handled pitcher Barry Foster on a hot Sunday game day!
Village Bison GM/Head Coach Gary Rima said ‘This group of guys worked so hard this season to make this championship possible! We got great pitching, fielding and hitting today and we had to be good in all three phases to beat a very good LA team to bring the Tampa Senior League Baseball championship home to The Villages! What a great team win today and great way to wrap up our first full season as a baseball team’!

VILLAGE BISON SENIOR BASEBALL ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The Village Bison 60-and-over baseball team will play for the Tampa Senior Baseball League championship next Sunday after a thrilling 12-7 semifinal win over the Tampa Thunder.

The Bison came out hot building a 7-0 lead through five innings, scoring two runs in the first, one in the third, one in the fourth, and three more in the fifth. The Thunder battled back, tying the game at 7 all with a three-run sixth, two runs in the seventh, and two more in the eighth.

With the game tied in the top of the ninth, the Bison put together a dramatic five-run inning — all with two outs.

Joe Kasper started the inning with a double. Steve Eddy followed with a single, and after Eddy stole second, the Bison had runners on second and third with no outs. After the next two hitters were retired, Steve Lloyd came to the plate with two on, two out, and a 3-2 count. Lloyd blasted a double to left-center field, scoring two runs and giving the Bison a 9-7 lead.

The Thunder then intentionally walked Carlos Padilla, putting runners on first and second. Gary Rima followed by ripping a triple down the right-field line, clearing the bases and extending the lead to 11-7. Vinny Zarrella then added another insurance run with a hard-hit double that scored Rima, putting the Bison ahead 12-7.

Bison starting pitcher Barry Foster had another impressive outing. He held the Thunder scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, going the distance, and picking up the playoff win on the mound.

The Village Bison pounded out 23 hits in the victory.

Gary Rima led the way with five hits, including the bases-clearing triple in the ninth. Carlos Padilla had four hits, including a double. Vinny Zarrella reached base six times, going 3-for-3 with a double and two singles, a walk, hit-by-pitch, and fielder’s choice.

Joe Kasper collected two hits, including a double. Steve Lloyd had two hits, including the game-winning, two-out double in the ninth that scored two runs. Steve Eddy and Randy Pawlowski also had two hits each. Barry Foster, Jay Loving, and Mark Stim rounded out the 23-hit attack with one hit apiece.

Defensively Vinny Zarrella made a sensational play at second snaring a line drive and doubling off the runner at first. Lenny Campbell caught the first 6 innings of the game and was outstanding behind the plate.

The Village Bison will now play Sunday, June 14, against the Latin Americans 60’s for the league championship. The Latin Americans advanced by beating the Tampa Sharks 25-17.

As of now, the championship game is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. at the Land O’Lakes Sports Complex, Field #9, 3032 Collier Parkway, Land O’Lakes, Florida.

VILLAGE BISON GRAB SHARE OF REGULAR SEASON TITLE!

The Village Bison Senior Men’s Baseball Team proved their fall championship season was no fluke, capturing a share of the Tampa Senior Baseball League Spring Regular-Season Title with an impressive 8-2 victory over the Tampa Sharks on Sunday May 31.

The Bison finished the regular season at 8-3, tying the Tampa Thunder and the Latin Americans, who both finished 7-2, for the top spot in the standings.

The Bison scored in the first, second, and fourth innings before breaking open a close 3-1 game with a five-run sixth inning. The Sharks added single runs in the third and eighth innings, but never threatened the Bison lead.

On the mound, Barry Foster delivered a stellar performance, pitching all eight innings while allowing just six hits and striking out seven to earn the victory.

Offensively, the Bison collected 13 hits. Vinny Zarrella led the offensive attack, going 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Joe Kasper had a solid day at the plate getting two hits in three at-bats, while Steve Eddy reached base in both of his plate appearances, finishing 1-for-1 with a walk.

Steve Lloyd and Fred Millar both would go 1 for 1 in the win! Carlos Padilla, Gary Rima, Barry Foster, Jay Loving, Gary Lynn, and Randy Pawlowski added one hit apiece to round out the 13 hit attack. Padilla set the tone at the top of the lineup, reaching base three times in four plate appearances.

The Tampa Senior Baseball League playoffs begin next Sunday with the top four teams advancing to the semifinals. Based on winning percentage, the Village Bison will face the Tampa Thunder in a highly anticipated semifinal matchup. Game times and the official bracket will be announced Monday.

The other semifinal will feature the Latin Americans against the Tampa Sharks. The championship game is scheduled for the following Sunday. ⚾🏆
