🚨 Remember when Barcelona refused to pay £30 million for Marcus Rashford?

Many people said it was the right decision.

Many people said Rashford wasn't worth it.

Then Barcelona went ahead and spent around £80 million on Anthony Gordon.

Fast forward to yesterday's World Cup game and the comparison couldn't be more painful.

Anthony Gordon played 72 minutes.

Rating: 6.2

Goals: 0

Shot Accuracy: 0%

Touches in the opposition box: 2

Marcus Rashford came on for just 18 minutes.

Rating: 7.2

Goals: 1

Shot Accuracy: 100%

And he completely changed the game.

Now, before Arsenal fans and England fans come for me, I'm not saying Rashford is a better player than Gordon based on one match.

But this is exactly why football clubs shouldn't make decisions based on public opinion and social media narratives.

Rashford has always had something special.

His pace.

His directness.

His ability to score goals out of nowhere.

And when he's confident, he's one of the most dangerous forwards in football.

Looking at those numbers, Barcelona must be wondering if they made the right choice.

One player cost a fraction of the price.

The other cost a fortune.

Yet the cheaper option delivered more impact in just 18 minutes than the expensive option managed in 72.

Football can be cruel sometimes.

And yesterday, Rashford gave Barcelona fans another reason to ask:

🚨 Not signing Harry Kane from Tottenham remains one of the biggest transfer mistakes Manchester United have ever made.

At the time, many people complained about his age and the transfer fee.

But football isn't played on spreadsheets.

It's played on the pitch.

And Harry Kane was exactly what Manchester United needed.

A proven Premier League goalscorer.

A leader.

A creator.

A striker who guarantees goals season after season.

Imagine Bruno Fernandes supplying Harry Kane all these years.

Imagine all those chances created by United's wingers falling to Kane instead.

The scary thing is that Kane wasn't some unknown talent. Everybody knew exactly what he would bring.

Yet United walked away.

Instead, the club decided to invest in a young Rasmus Højlund, who has since moved on and now plays for Napoli.

Højlund may still become a top striker, but he was never the finished product that Kane was.

One was a project.

The other was a guarantee.

While United continued searching for a reliable goalscorer, Kane kept scoring goals wherever he went and proving why he was one of the best strikers in world football.

Looking back now, it's hard not to feel that Manchester United missed a golden opportunity.

Sometimes the expensive option is actually the cheaper option in the long run.

And Harry Kane is the perfect example of that.

🚨 While watching England against Croatia, especially in the first half, I kept asking myself one question:

Why was Gareth Southgate sacked in the first place?

Because from what I watched, this so-called "Tuchel Ball" didn't look very different.

The football was still predictable.

The attack still revolved around Harry Kane.

The team still relied heavily on set-pieces and crosses into the box.

And for long periods, there wasn't much creativity from open play.

Maybe it's too early to judge.

Maybe Tuchel needs more time.

But if we're being honest, many England fans expected a dramatic change in style when he arrived.

They expected a more aggressive team.

A more exciting team.

A more modern team.

Instead, what I saw against Croatia looked very familiar.

In fact, I'd argue that Southgate's England occasionally produced more entertaining football than what we saw yesterday.

At least with Southgate, you could point to certain games where England attacked with freedom and intensity.

This England side still feels cautious.

Still feels rigid.

Still feels overly dependent on Harry Kane producing a moment of magic or a set-piece creating something.

Yes, England scored four goals.

Yes, they won the match.

And yes, results are ultimately what matter.

But if we're judging purely on the football, I'm yet to see the revolution many promised us.

Maybe it will come later in the tournament.

Maybe this was just first-game nerves.

But after 90 minutes against Croatia, I'm not seeing a massive difference between Tuchel's England and the England that got Southgate shown the door.

🚨 Yes, England defeated Croatia 4-2 yesterday.

Yes, they scored four goals.

Yes, Thomas Tuchel got the win.

But if I'm being honest, I'm still not convinced.

The scoreline looks impressive, but once you look beyond the goals, there are some worrying signs.

My biggest concern is the defense.

The ease with which Croatia played through England's backline was alarming.

Take Croatia's second goal for example.

One pass.

Just one pass.

And suddenly England's defensive structure disappeared.

The midfield was bypassed, the defenders were exposed, and Croatia were through on goal.

That is not the kind of defending you associate with World Cup-winning teams.

Against stronger opposition, those moments will be punished even more severely.

My second concern is creativity.

England scored four goals, but where was the creativity from open play?

Too much of their threat came from set-pieces and corners.

Now, don't get me wrong, set-pieces are an important part of modern football.

But when you're relying heavily on corners to create danger, it tells me there is still a problem in the creative department.

England struggled at times to unlock Croatia through the middle.

There wasn't enough incision.

Not enough risk-taking.

Not enough players capable of consistently finding that killer pass.

Tuchel will be happy with the result.

And rightly so.

Winning your opening World Cup game is always important.

But if England genuinely want to lift this trophy, there is still plenty of work to be done.

The defense needs tightening.

The creativity needs improving.

And the balance of the team still needs refining.

Three points secured.

Job done.

But the performance leaves me with more questions than answers.

🚨 In this life, just keep going, don't relent even when you face rejections, in due time, those that rejected you will celebrate you.

A few weeks ago, Rashford was literally begging Barcelona to sign him for just €30m which is equivalent to £26m, Barcelona said no, you are not hardworking, you don't press, you don't defend, you don't know how to play as a goalkeeper too. What did they do? They went and paid 80m for Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United, Anthony Gordon of all players just to spite Manchester United and Rashford.

Fast forward to the match against Croatia where their 80m started and hard the worst game I have ever seen from a player while Rashford was on the bench. Gordon was hooked on the 72 minutes of the game for Rashford who came in within 18mins, he already scored for England.

Barcelona now posted about Gordon and Rashford playing for England, celebrating the player they rejected.

One would expect them to post more of their latest recruit but it was Rashford's image that covered everywhere. You could barely see Gordon in the picture.

I believe they have now seen the reason Manchester United doesn't want to reduce the price tag because Rashford is way better than that €30m

🇵🇹 The internet has been on Cristiano Ronaldo's case ever since Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by Congo Republic.

I've seen people questioning why Ronaldo is still starting for Portugal.

Seriously?

We're talking about the greatest goalscorer in football history.

A man with over 900 career goals.

A player who has spent two decades proving people wrong.

You can criticize his performance if you want, that's football.

But questioning his place in the starting XI? That's an insult to Ronaldo and football at large.

Let's be honest about what happened against Congo Republic.

What clear-cut chances did Ronaldo miss?

What opportunities were created for him?

Because I watched the game and I genuinely struggled to see Portugal create anything meaningful for their captain.

A striker can only work with the service he receives.

And yesterday, the service simply wasn't there.

In fact, Portugal's biggest problem was creativity.

Bruno Fernandes, who is usually the team's chief creator, had one of his quietest games in a Portugal shirt.

When Bruno isn't finding passes, creating chances, and controlling the tempo, Portugal become a completely different team.

So how can the blame fall entirely on Ronaldo?

Football is a team game.

If the midfield isn't creating, the forwards will suffer.

It's that simple.

By all means, analyze Ronaldo's performance.

Criticize him if you think he was poor.

But let's not disrespect one of the greatest players to ever kick a football by acting as if he is the reason Portugal failed to win.

Cristiano Ronaldo has earned far more respect than that.

And knowing him, the criticism will only motivate him even more.

🇵🇹 I genuinely want to know what Roberto Martínez's pedigree was before Portugal handed him one of the most talented squads in world football.

Yes, he won the FA Cup with Wigan in 2013, and that achievement deserves respect. He also guided Belgium to a third-place finish at the 2018 World Cup, their best-ever World Cup result. But beyond that, where are the major trophies?

This is the same manager many people believe underachieved with Belgium's golden generation.

A team that had Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku, Thibaut Courtois and several other elite players somehow finished with no major trophy to show for it.

Now look at what he has at Portugal.

Cristiano Ronaldo.

Bruno Fernandes.

Bernardo Silva.

Vitinha.

João Neves.

Rafael Leão.

Nuno Mendes.

This is a squad that should be playing exciting, dominant football.

Instead, what are we watching?

Against Congo Republic, the football was slow, predictable and painfully boring.

And don't even get me started on the lineup.

How do you start Pedro Neto on the left and push Bernardo Silva out wide when everybody knows Bernardo is at his best influencing games from central areas?

Portugal have too much talent to be producing performances like that.

Maybe Martínez will turn it around as the tournament progresses.

Maybe this draw is just a bump in the road.

But right now, with the quality available to him, Portugal should be looking far more convincing than they did against Congo Republic.

For me, the issue isn't the players.

The issue is whether the coach can get the best out of them.

And based on what I watched yesterday, I'm not convinced.

🇵🇹 A few days ago, I made a post saying that a midfield three of João Neves, Vitinha, and Bruno Fernandes would struggle to work effectively together.

The response?

"You're clueless."

"You don't understand football."

"How can three world-class midfielders not work together?"

Well, after watching Portugal against Congo Republic, I think some people now understand what I was talking about.

My argument was never that these players aren't good enough.

Far from it.

Vitinha is a fantastic footballer.

João Neves is one of the brightest young midfielders in the world.

Bruno Fernandes is an elite creator.

The problem is balance.

Football isn't just about putting your best players on the pitch.

It's about putting together a team that complements each other.

Spain faced a similar issue years ago.

They had Xavi, Iniesta, Busquets, and Xabi Alonso.

Too much quality, but also too many players who wanted to operate in similar areas.

Eventually, Vicente del Bosque moved Iniesta to the left side to create balance, and the rest is history.

Against Congo Republic, Portugal's midfield looked exactly like what I feared.

Everybody wanted the ball.

Everybody wanted to create.

But who was protecting the defence?

Who was breaking up play?

Who was providing the physical presence when Portugal lost possession?

The midfield lacked structure.

And Portugal paid for it.

For me, the solution is simple.

One of Vitinha or João Neves has to make way for a more defensive-minded midfielder.

Not because they are poor players.

Not because they don't deserve to start.

But because football is about balance.

That change would allow Bruno Fernandes to operate higher up the pitch where he is most dangerous.

It would also give Portugal more protection defensively and more control in transition.

Roberto Martínez has one of the best squads in this World Cup.

But having great players isn't enough.

You need the right combination.

Against Congo Republic, the combination didn't work.

Now it's up to Martínez to fix it before Portugal pay an even bigger price later in the tournament.

🚨 One thing Real Madrid have mastered over the years is controlling the headlines.

And sometimes, I wonder if they also understand how much those headlines can affect players.

Take the case of Marc Cucurella.

Real Madrid couldn't wait until after Spain's World Cup match against Cape Verde before announcing his signing.

The news broke just hours before kick-off.

Coincidence or not, Cucurella went on to have a poor game as Spain were held to a frustrating goalless draw.

Then yesterday, it happened again.

Real Madrid announced Bernardo Silva just hours before Portugal's World Cup clash against Congo Republic.

And what followed?

One of the poorest performances I can remember from Bernardo Silva in a Portugal shirt.

He looked off his game.

The sharpness wasn't there.

The influence wasn't there.

Portugal drew 1-1 and Bernardo struggled throughout the match.

Now, am I saying Real Madrid are responsible for these performances?

No.

These are professional footballers and they have a job to do.

But let's not pretend that transfer announcements don't affect players mentally.

One minute you're preparing for a World Cup game.

The next minute your phone is exploding with messages, congratulations, interviews, media attention and social media reactions.

It's impossible for that not to have some effect.

Personally, I think these announcements could have waited.

We're talking about the biggest tournament in football.

The focus should be on the national teams and the matches, not on club transfers.

Maybe it's just a coincidence.

Maybe Cucurella and Bernardo would have had those performances regardless.

But if I were a national team coach, I'd be furious seeing one of my key players become the centre of a transfer circus just hours before a World Cup match.

Timing matters.

And in football, even the smallest distraction can make a huge difference.

🚨I am not moved by those ratings Bruno Fernandes received yesterday against Congo Republic.

Bruno, you were poor.

And I'm saying this because I know how good you are.

That wasn't the Bruno Fernandes we've become accustomed to seeing for Portugal over the years.

Where was the urgency?

Where were the risky forward passes?

Where was the creativity?

You played far too safe.

Everything looked slow, predictable, and lethargic.

Portugal rely heavily on you to create chances and dictate the tempo of games, but yesterday you didn't look like the player who has carried both club and country on so many occasions.

Maybe the ratings are flattering you, but from what I watched, your performance was worse than the numbers suggest.

The frustrating thing is that we know your standards are much higher than that.

That's why I'm disappointed.

Not because you're a bad player, but because you're a world-class player capable of so much more.

And Bruno, you know better than anyone that people are waiting for you to fail.

Since winning all those individual awards in England, you've attracted more critics than ever before.

Every poor touch will be analyzed.

Every misplaced pass will be clipped.

Every average performance will be used against you.

Don't give them that opportunity.

Respond the way great players always do.

On the pitch.

Because Portugal will need the real Bruno Fernandes if they're going to go far in this World Cup.

And I have no doubt that player will show up sooner rather than later.
