📍KANAWHA STATE FOREST | Charleston, WV

Would we stop here again? Absolutely. 🐾

We explored part of the 2.5-mile Davis Creek Trail, a beautiful wooded trail that follows along the creek and gave us exactly what we were looking for — shade, water, and plenty for Daisy to sniff along the way.

And apparently, we weren’t the only ones enjoying the trail. 👀 We found both deer AND bear tracks in the mud! 🦌🐻

We only hiked a portion of Davis Creek because our crew had other plans for the day — namely spending a few hours playing in the creek, catching crawdads, and enjoying a picnic. Sometimes the best adventures aren’t about finishing the trail. 💛

Today’s assignment: lead the humans through Kanawha State Forest. 🐕🌲

Mission accomplished:
✔️ Found the creek
✔️ Supervised crawdad hunting
✔️ Ran as fast as possible
✔️ Sniffed everything
✔️ Got muddy
✔️ Completely exhausted myself

I’d call that a successful day. 💛

Follow us for a full trail review on Sunday!

📍 South Mountains State Park - North Carolina

We made this one of our stops on the way to West Virginia, and overall, we’re glad we did.

We were a little disappointed to learn that the trail to High Shoals Falls was still closed after Hurricane Helene, but the park still gave us exactly what we were hoping for—a beautiful mountain hike with towering trees, rocky trails, flowing creeks, and plenty to explore.

The little guy’s favorite part wasn’t even the waterfall. It was spotting wildlife, climbing the rocks, and playing in the creek along the way.

One thing to know before you go: we found two ticks on Daisy after our hike, so if you’re bringing your pup, be sure to check them thoroughly afterward.

Our Ratings:
🌳 Shade: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🥾 Effort: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
🐕 Dog Friendly: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
🚗 Worth the Drive: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
🌼 Daisy Approved: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Good to Know:
🚽 Restrooms available
🧺 Plenty of picnic areas
🚙 Plenty of parking

Even without the main waterfall, we’d still recommend adding South Mountains State Park to a mountain road trip.

Have you ever hiked here?

Every trail has its own adventure. And field reports are an important part of every hike.

Have you used walkies with your littles? They are a game changer!
