A year into shifting my training focus and the biggest lessons have had nothing to do with the workouts themselves.
A few things that have genuinely changed the way I train and feel:
SLEEP. I used to sacrifice it without thinking twice. Now I protect it like it is part of the program… because it is!
NUTRITION. Stopped treating it like an afterthought. What I eat and when I eat it shows up in my performance whether I pay attention to it or not.
LISTENING TO MY BODY. This one took the longest. Learning the difference between pushing through something and making it worse has probably kept me out of more injuries than anything else.
RECOVERY. Some days the smartest training decision I can make is to slow down. That used to feel like weakness. Now it just feels like experience.
PATIENCE. Everything takes a little longer than it used to. Progress, recovery, feeling good after a hard session. Fighting that was exhausting. Accepting it made everything better.
Still figuring it out one session at a time. But I feel better and move better than I did when I was only focused on what was happening inside the gym.
What is one thing that has changed the way you approach training as you have gotten older? I would love to hear it.
