A year into shifting my training focus and the biggest lessons have had nothing to do with the workouts themselves.

A few things that have genuinely changed the way I train and feel:

SLEEP. I used to sacrifice it without thinking twice. Now I protect it like it is part of the program… because it is!

NUTRITION. Stopped treating it like an afterthought. What I eat and when I eat it shows up in my performance whether I pay attention to it or not.

LISTENING TO MY BODY. This one took the longest. Learning the difference between pushing through something and making it worse has probably kept me out of more injuries than anything else.

RECOVERY. Some days the smartest training decision I can make is to slow down. That used to feel like weakness. Now it just feels like experience.

PATIENCE. Everything takes a little longer than it used to. Progress, recovery, feeling good after a hard session. Fighting that was exhausting. Accepting it made everything better.

Still figuring it out one session at a time. But I feel better and move better than I did when I was only focused on what was happening inside the gym.

What is one thing that has changed the way you approach training as you have gotten older? I would love to hear it.

Four weeks in and I am not going to pretend this has been easy.

I’m currently training two sessions a day for about three to four hours of work total.

Today was 80 minutes of continuous effort. 1000M row, 1200M run, and 1000M ski erg. Five rounds. Over 1,000 calories. Heart rate spiked at 171 bpm.

Here is the thing though, a HYROX Pro Solo Male race is 8 kilometers of running and 8 functional fitness stations. The best men in the world finish in 55 to 65 minutes. Based on where my pacing sits right now I am tracking a 70 to 80 minute finish in Tampa. That is a competitive time and I have 23 weeks left to keep closing the gap.

I signed up for my first ever HYROX and went straight to the Pro division. I promise it’s not because I had it all figured out but because the goal was and is still worth the risk. The goal is the podium. I won’t slow down until I am there.

If you are chasing something big right now I would love to hear about it. Drop it in the comments. You got this!!!

This morning felt different on that track.

A soldier I have been working with for many months stepped up today and crushed his AFT. He also cleared his Waist to Height Ratio. And with that, our unit hit 100% pass rate on both standards. Every single soldier has made it. I am so proud of them all!!!

This may not seem like a major accomplishment for many but in the National Guard, not every Soldier is required to workout every morning, provided healthy food at a DFAC, and given all the amenities of their Active Duty counterparts.

When I arrived at this unit I volunteered for the role of the Health and Wellness NCO. It comes with the territory of being an Army H2F Integrator. I looked around, saw over 15 soldiers who needed real support, and got to work building a program that could actually help them. It was not a punishment PT plan but a real health and wellness program built around where each soldier was starting from, what their body needed, and what was realistic given their lives outside the Army. We addressed movement, conditioning, strength, and nutrition in a way that fit real life.

However, none of it works if the soldiers do not believe in it and they did. Every single one of them showed up and did the work. That is not something a program does. That is something people do.

What I love most about today is what comes next. These soldiers get to stop training just to survive the standard and start training to see how far they can actually go. That is the sunrise right there.

If you are a soldier still in that fight, keep going. And if you want support along the way, my DMs are open.

What is the hardest part of staying consistent when you are training around a full life? I’d love to hear it.
